Louis, if you do not have a separate supply cutoff to the fixture-most residential units do not- then yes you would need to turn the house supply off. Remember to bleed the pressure off the system before attempting this repair.

1. you remove handle.
2. remove the chrome extension tube that goes around the stem and is in the center of the trim plate. It will pull straight out by hand.
3. there is a small brass retaining clip that holds the cartridge in place. It has a small tab on the top of it with a small hole in the center of the tab. Remove this tab by lifting it straight up. You may need a small set of pliers.
4. Now take and attach the handle back on and pull the cartridge out.
5. It sounds as if you have hard water in your house and the mineral deposits have caused this issue. This will also make extraction a bit harder but if yu give it a few good pulls it normally will come out. If not you may need to buy a cartridge extraction tool that is sold at most hardware stores relatively inexpensively.
6. Pay attention to how the stem is orientated so you can install the new one the exact same way.If you neglect this you may find that the hot and cold water are on opposite sides now. If this occurs remove the cartridge and rotate it 180 degrees and reinsert.
Thanks for using Fix Ya.

Moen single handled shower the hot water turns cooler then cold after a minute

Your whole house is likely plumbed wrong so that it is impossible to have equal pressures of both hot and cold at your shower. If you had your home plumbed with aquapex using a radiator for the hot water and a radiator for the cold water and have the radiators fed with a 1 inch line you can have close to perfect pressures.

I have a Danze D112000BT Single Control Pressure Balance Mixing Valve with Screwdriver Stops that was installed in 07, it been working fine then last week it all of a sudden became really stiff to turn...

Danze cartridges are known to have problems after time with hard water. If you call Danze at 1-888-328-2383 USA
Canada: 1-800-487-8372
They have a lifetime warranty of defects, and will replace the cartridge for that valve for free. It will actually be best to have a plumber do it because taking the cartridges out can be simple, putting them back in and tightening it up the way it should be can be tricky. It is nice that you have the valve with the screwdriver stops. That allows you to remove the cartridge without having to turn the water off to the entire house. Simple turn each stop to turn the water off, remove cartridge, put new cartridge in.

I just installed a Tuscany Asti shower body. The hot and cold are reversed...the instruction booklet says, "the water supply can be modified to correct the orientation without changing the pipe...

My booklet says "remove the cap by hand, remove the eclip from the cartridge body with pliers, remove the stem ring from the cartridge body with pliers, reverse teh cartridge stem by turning 180deg. It is not necessary to remove the cartridge from the body. Make sure the flat side of the stem ring is on top and re-assemble in reverse order." or something to that effect.

Good afternoon, We have a 25yr old delta shower faucet and head. both work wonderful but the water is not all that hot- our new hotwater tank is set at 130 degrees. If i need to change the mix do i do it...

You don't change the setting on the faucet or behind the shower wall. You change the mix in the hot water heater itself. New hot water heaters are set at a relatively lower hot-water-setting for liability purposes. To achieve a hotter mix, take the cover plate off the hot water heater. You will see a dial setting that allows you to turn up the heat. Depending on what type of water heater you have, there might be two cover plates (lower and upper). If so, you'll need to adjust both of these.

The faucet leaks, behind the wall when the shower

The most common reason for basement leakage is from the seal at the drain or the seal behind the overflow. With the overflow, the water trickles down after bouncing off your body and back onto the tub. This possibility MUST be eliminated first before determining the next step, Turn on the cold water and fill the tub and let the water go into the overflow for about 5 minutes. This will simulate someone in and using the shower. Check for leaks in the basement.

This test, as simple as it is, will also implicate bad plumbing connections at the valve itself behind the wall as well as eliminate backsplash from the showerer bouncing back onto your control valve(s).

If you have a leakage, wait a day and, with the drain open, turn on the hot/cold valve(s). and waste some water for another 5 minute test. This test eliminates the overflow as a suspect, and with the drain open almost always eliminates the drain as well. Hey..in plumbing there are no perfect answers.

If you still have leakage and no one is showering you have pretty well isolated the valve or connections to the valve. If you don't have leakage, it points to water bouncing off the body and onto the control valve(s) at which point resealing would be in order.

You can get leakage also if the caulking around the tub where the tub meets the wall has gone south. Stamped out steel tubs (common in rental apartments) have open corners so if the wall-to tub caulking is poor then the shower bounce off the body will easily trickle to the basement. This is not an issue with cast iron or fiberglass/plastic tubs.

If these tests truely point to the valve(s), repost your ? and refer to the drain tests completed, and supply as much information as you can about the brand and age of your valve(s)

No cold water from Moen 2253 tub/shower valve, when i turn handle to cold I get hot water, when handle is turn to hot i get hot water

Here is a quick check to see if the cartridge may be at fault allowing the cold and hot to mix. Turn off the hot water supply, with hot water supply off turn faucet on. Turn to the hot and cold sides, If you have only cold water then your faucet cartridge is at fault or the cartridge housing is worn. Shut all supply valves and remove cartridge and inspect housing for signs of wear. If wear is visible a new shower valve is needes. If none visible replace cartridge. I have included a link of a PDF file an exploded parts list. I hope this helps in solving your problem. Please rate if the answer helps in any way. Good Luck and have a great week. Jeff

I have an 11 year old, single handle shower control that when turned off has dripping. I have taken off the handle, etc and am at the wall. What is the next step or steps?

After you remove the chrome collar and plastic collar washer (behind the faucet handle), pry the beauty plate off the wall. Turn off the house main water supply. Remove the four screws and washer holding the cartridge and valve stem in place. Save the metal washer under the four screws for use with the new cartridge. Replace the stem/cartridge assembly and secure with the saved metal washer and four screws. Reinstall beauty plate, collar & collar washer, then handle.

I have a Delta single handled fixure that goes up and down in my shower. It is squeaking. It is getting harder to turn off. How do I fix this. It is similar to Model No.142913. It is about 8 years old.

There is a replacement cartridge for the valve. It is not expensive. ($20-$30) Lowes You need to see if there are shut-off valves on the inlet ports of the valve (behind bath wall cover-plate), they look like two flat-head screws usually on lower side of valve. If these shut offs are not present, you may have to shut-off house main. These valves are very reliable and typically an easy fix!
I hope this helps.

Faucett drips after shutoff

First shut main water off to house. Pull handle, there is a set screw on bottom side. It is a allen wrench. Now with chanel locks unscrew bonnet and pull cartridge, behind you will find 2 black washers with springs in them. This is what you need to replace to get dripping to stop.
