Sorry about the previous message, stupid enter key.. -_-
Anyways the Administrator user may be disabled by default and so you will need to use a third party software to either enable it or to reset your own password (i.e. Offline NT Password reset). Burn it on a CD and reboot the laptop with it.

Provided the Administrator login has no password, you can restart into safemode and login as Administrator.

to get to safe mode restart your computer after post (the beep) press the F8 key. when you get the list of options select safe mode.

Is your monitor physically off? If so, check your monitor connection. Another problem might be your graphics card.

How to access a workgroup domain admin if password is forgotten.

Restart your computer during the boot process tap the f8 button three times this will boot into safe mode where the only things working will be your mouse and keyboard enabling you to attempt to repair your computer Advanced Boot Options screen appears.

Select the Safe Mode option using the up and down arrow keys, then press the ENTER key. Choose "Windows XP Home/Professional", depending on the version of the operating system.

Press ENTER. Shortly, the welcome screen should show.
Log in as "Administrator". Click Yes to not use System Restore Mode.

Click the Start button. Choose Run and type in "control user passwords" (without the quotes). Click OK.

Select the "Administrator" user. Click Change my password. Enter a new password in the corresponding text boxes. Click OK. Write this password down and store it in a secure place Close the User Accounts window and restart Windows.

I believe you, but this is still a hard thing to do. It's possible to bypass a Windows password, but first, why don't you just call him? Anyway, here's a quick guide on how to do it.

Yes, when you switch the laptop on hold down the F8 key until you see a black screen with a list of white text, one of the options will be "Safe Mode", use the arrow keys to highlight safe mode (just safe mode, not safe mode with anything) and press return. The computer will start to the welcome screen and you will see a user-name you don't normally see called "Administrator". Click on Administrator and you will find it is not password protected (in spite of the fact that the Administrator account has more access to the system than any other account!) when the administrator profile loads it will ask you if you want to continue in safe mode and you do. click start, click control panel and click on users and groups now click on your son's user account and click remove password. now click back, click on the Administrator account and click change password, the old password should be left blank and you're new Administrator password should be something at least 7 letters, numbers and special characters (!@£$%^&*) long that you can remember. Now just restart and let it start up normally, once loaded advise your son to set a password he can remember or at least write down somewhere safe.
