Question about Riding Mowers & Garden Tractors

Open Question

Can an Eaton Model X778 -005 Hydrostatic drive unit be rebuilt.

I have a zero turn lawn mower which seems to loose drive in one direction and will eventually regain power in that direction in about 1 minute. Suspect Eaton Drive unit. Snapper cautions against checking hydraulic fluid level. Can the fluid resevoir be opened for checking the level of fluid or even the addition of fluid. Also what type should be added?

Thanks for any help.

I have a snapper zero turn that looses power in the left hydro after 10 minutes. Took both hydros off machine and left has much less fluid than right. Can I add more? Do I have to bleed the air? What type and how much fluid.

In the back of the mower...probably under the seat, there should be a lever to release the transmission, or it is on the back plate. As far as the noise when trying to move drive the mower, the brake in the back, next to the transmission is jammed, use a 1/2 inch wrench to loosen it maybe 1/4 turn and this should unlock the brakes

SOURCE: checking fluid level

most units of this size & quality have a factory sealed transmission. to check or change oil, the transmission would have to be removed.

I would check the drive belt going to rear end if not that I would check fluid level in transmission.

check that the drive pulley to the hydraulic unit is still fixed to he shaft and has not got loose and just turning but not driving the pump shaft. Other than that you may have to check out the pump pressure of the drive unit.

Hello,
My name is Dane and I'm going to help you with your problem. First, I believe those craftsman units are sealed and there's no way to actually check the hydrostatic oil level. So the first thing to do is make sure that you don'thave any leaks around the transmission assembly. If it looks clean and oil free, I would venture to say that it is more of a 90% chance that your drive belt is the problem, however it isn't from icing up, but rather from the heat of the extra work from the weight of the snowblower, causing it to slip. The belt isn't all that expensive and before I would get excited and start worrying about transmission failure, I would just replace the belt first, and rule it out. Make sure all your pulleys and tensioners don't have any loose hardware, and look alligned.

I think you'll fix the problem though just by the belt replacement. I hope I've helped. Thank you! Dane

Wont move forward or reverse-- transmission??

Does it have gears or a hydrostatic (automatic) transmission?

If it's a gear model, sounds like a loose drive belt.

If it's hydrostatic, it could be a belt problem or a problem inside the transmission. If it's a tranmission problem, this is not good. Many of the transmissions on riding lawn mowers are not serviceable - they are just replaced.

Hydrostatic Transmission Failure

There is a transmission bypass lever on the back of the mower, if the bypass is moved out of the drive position, it will not drive in either direction, and will be really easy to push.
