It sounds like one of two things, either your hard drive is bad, or the formatting on your hard drive is so bad Windows cannot deal with it. To troubleshoot it try booting the computer up with a live run CD or a bootable USB drive and see if the hard drive is accessible . If you booted up with a live run CD or bootable USB drive that has an operating system on it you can reformat the drive (provided it opens) and that will do it. If it does not open, or is not accessible you will have to replace the hard drive

Your hard drive appears to be corrupted. Your computer is telling you that the boot sector cannot be read. If you have recovery discs, you may try a recovery. A full recovery will erase all your personal files. If it gives you an option to restore to an earlier working startup or repair startup, choose those options first.
Since it is an HP, it will give you the option of running the recovery program from the protected area of the hard drive when the HP screen comes up during startup. Pushing F11 during the startup screen on an HP will nomally take you to a recovery mode. F9 may take you to a diagnostic and you can check your hard drive from there.
You can press F10 to enter the Setup menu. You can check your basic settings to see if the computer is registering your hard drive. Do not make any changes in the Setup Menu unless you know what you are doing.
You can boot your computer from a bootable DVD or USB device (press Esc key during startup to change your boot order) and then try to copy your files to a USB drive. Once your files are safe, you can attempt to recover Windows without fear of losing your data.
If you are handy with your hands, you can remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer via a USB adapter to copy your files to a safe location or/and run diagnostics.
Quite often, a virus will target your boot area of the drive rendering it unable to boot your computer, but the drive and your data can be recuperated. USB adapters for laptop hard drives can cost you as little as $10 on Ebay.
Good luck

Unable to format, partition, ins. os and boot my toshiba TE2100..

The CMOS needs to be set to first read the CD or DVD drive before it reads the Hard drive. Once your XP disk is in the drive it will boot from the CD drive and setup the computer, The CMOS is acessed by turning on the computer and immediatly pressing either the deleat key or the F! or F2 key try each one till you get to CMOS then look for boot section. Set CD drive to first your HD drive to second.

Can you enter the CMOS and veryfy that is boothing from the hard disk? you have to remove any cd, dvd, usb drive too. Enter the BIOS/CMOS by pressing F2 xor DEL when booting. Look for BOOT sequence, and set the hard disk as firt boot device. If after that doesnt boot, reinstall OS and if after that doesnt boot, you need a new HD.

My aspire one linux edition powered off during D2D recovery!

Download Unetbootin on your windows machine and use it to load the recovery disk on to a usb drive. plug the usb into the AA1 and boot. While it's booting hit the f12 key this will bring up boot choices. Select the usb drive and away you go. And please remember to have it plugged in. Or ask around and borrow a portable CD-Rom. During boot you will see the screen ask you to select f12 to select a boot option.
