I cannot promise that this is the problem, but this is where mine was broken, and you may be able to fix yours this way.

I was able to remove the plastic around the tender and access the motor. Using alligator clips, I was able to connect the battery directly to the motor, bypassing the circuit board. The motor functioned, therefore the only component that seemed to be defective was the circuit board, located behind the speaker in the engine unit.

As far as I know, the only place to buy a replacement circuit board is from www.tigerimports.com. Search for part number MEVA0024. Cost is around $15 + shipping (around $6 or so).

I should be receiving this part by the end of the week and will report if it fixed the problem.

Thanks for using Fixya. If I didn't help your situation, please DO NOT label this advise as "inappropriate".

Stop the press! Before ordering a new circuit board, you may want to troubleshoot the following first:

    1) Ensure that the battery and charger are both good. If after a full day on the charger it doesn't have a 6V reading with a multimeter, then consider purchasing a new battery from the supplier in the above Solution.

    2) Remember that to operate the train, you have to press AND HOLD the right-hand red button. Releasing the button stops the train.

    Good luck!

To replace the circuit board is rather simple. You need to just remove the speaker, held in with one screw, where the "boiler" is on the lead Thomas unit (in the Cab).

The speaker will slide out with the circuit breaker attached to the slide. Gently bend back the plastic and the circuit board will pop out.

Carefully remove the connectors and reattach to new circuit board (they are color coded, so it's pretty easy).

Fit the circuit board back into the plastic holder and slide back into its slot in the Thomas unit.

Remember, a good battery and charger is a must, so put your battery on the charger while you wait for the part. And when you go to run the train, remember to press the button down and hold it. :)

    Good luck!!

Hi everyone. I had been given a hand me down from my sister and I have been having the same problem. I did exactly what VentureForth (the above comment) said to do reference by passing the circuit board. Once I knew my motor was ok, I ordered a new circuit board. The site is actually www.tigerimports.net. I was able to install no problem and now my thomas works like new and is ready for Christmas morning!

We had the same problem with a second hand train and when we were putting it together on Christmas Eve we got really stressed in case our son thought Santa brought him dud goods!!!! I even got up at half past three in the morning after leaving it on the charge all evening and it still wouldn't move, only the sound was working. But buy sheer accident I found the problem..... you have to keep your hand on the red button til it moves, as soon as you press the button the light and horn comes on but there is a delay of maybe 10-15 seconds before the train actually moves.

Thank you for your post. This was exactly my problem. I was getting worried that I would have to start taking measures such as buying a new battery or circuit board, but after reading your post, I wait longer and it worked. Thank you for taking the time to post this. You saved me alot of time and money :)

I just purchased the Thomas train last Saturday, and had the same problem. I took the battery into a Battery Shop, and they said that it only had 1.6 volts (even though it said it was charged).

I bought a new battery, and it works great! (too bad my son is now afraid of it) :-)

Good Luck. I hope this helps.

Our Thomas does the same thing, you press the button and after a few seconds when the engine should start to move, there is a "click" and the thing goes dead. It usually gets into the bad mode after the battery got charged. The Thomas will stay dead for some minutes and then you can try again. You can speed this up by disconnecting the battery for about 15 seconds and then you can try again.
I was close to also getting the new circuit board, but I think in our Thomas this is caused by an intermittent connection in the connector from the battery to the Thomas. I'm talking of the big connector you have to undo when you also charge the Thomas. The connection is bad and lets just enough current through for the music or whistle, but not enough to make the motor go. You might be able to verify this by making it play the music and carefully wiggling on the connector. If it stops playing when you wiggle around the connector you might have the same problem.
You can now try to clean the contacts of the connector using a thin piece of sand paper you slide between the contacts. If this does not do it try to move the connector around and try again.... and again....

I have the same problem except with mine there's that "click" and Thomas won't move. I've lwft the battery charging for 24 hours as manual suggested but still get nothing but the music and the light turning on. Frustrating when I have a 3 year old that wished it worked.

Actually, it is tigerimports.net and the circuit board is $15 and the batter is $29.  This should solve the problem and is worth the minimal cost as my son loves it.

Hi

Have you tried keep pressing the right hand button down. When you press the button down and hold the press, then the sounds are finished, the trains starts driving. When you release the button the train stops at once.

first of all check for at least 6 volts from the battery and the charger, you can test this using a multimeter, if the battery doesn't show any volts, lift up one side of the plastic housing on the top and verify that both the positive and negative wires are plugged in

The red button on the right must be held down for anything to move. It turns the lights on, makes some train noises, then moves forward. If you don't hold the button down, nothing will happen. Note that when the train is underway, the left red button becomes a train whistle. Otherwise, when the train is not running, that left button produces music. Hope this helps.
