Rear AC / heating thumping sound

Yes the noise can be gear "jump" over, the teeth don't break since they are nylon in most cases. This is most often caused by a sticking/warped air temperature control blend door.

The gears are jammed, or the timing gear is out of sync, and possibily a bad loading belt.

I also have a problem with the drawer. It opens when I switch the unit on and when I close it - it opens again!

If I switch off at the mains the drawer remains open - to prevent dust ingress I have resolved to holding the drawer in whilst shutting down the power until I get a solution.

If anyone has a solution I would be grateful.

This is the most common problem with dig cameras. The reason being that there are tiny gears inside the lens assembly, that operate it. When a tooth gets broken off, or some dirt, lint, sand, etc., gets in the lens assembly, a gear can get jammed. When this happens, the camera cannot "initialize" and be ready to take pictures. There is an excellent blog about this problem. It is listed under the lens error category, but it applies to all lens malfunctions, and the one you're having. Here it is:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
Try their suggestions. They say about 50% of the cameras can be fixed trying their free fixes. If nothing works for you, and you decide to have it repaired, get an estimate first. The cost of repair can easily exceed the cost of a new camera. Good luck, and hope this helps!

SA-HT740 Broken gear

You probably can get the parts from Tritronics, but as far as I know, there aren't hard-copy manuals normally made for any of the newer products. The only paper available nowadays are the users manuals... The service manuals are on-line at Panasonic and available only to authorized repair centers. Sorry.

I'm curious - how in the heck did a gear break in the thing??? There's nothing strong enough in the drive system to do that (either the motors would sieze or belts slip).

The loading mechanism has jammed somehow. When powered on, the unit attempts to get to a known position. If that fails, the message you indicate is displayed. The only way to resolve this is to dis-assemble the unit and rebuild the mechainsm. This should NOT be attempted without the service manual. There is a particular way to re-assemble these so that the gearing is correct. There are small gears and levers that need to be aligned properly. Also, there may be a broken lever or gear that needs to be replaced. I have rbuilt a number of these and the parts (if needed) are cheap (<$4 total).

I wold suggest that you bring this to an authorized Panasonic service center.
