At the adaptor input on the device there is a small diagram that shows the polarity of the tip and the shield of the connector. If it is not there, check the information plate on the back of unit. It has the model/serail number on it as well as the power consumption and build date.

Provided the laptop booted (albeit to requiring bios set up), all is well. The data such as time needs to be re-entered manually, because since the battery is required to maintain volatile memory, when the battery goes flat or is removed, the data is lost. Re-enter all data, including boot sequence (i.e. IDE 0, CD-ROM/DVD)! exit saving to CMOS. should reboot to OS.

I found the spec for the adaptor:
Output: 12V DC
Current: up to 5A / 60W max
Connector: Barrel, Center +
It means positive is the inner side of the connector.
Here is some useful links.
It is not a very special adapor i think.
