My old, cheap Dell will not come on, screen is black

I kept getting message--not enough memory. Tried deleting a lot, defragmenter did not have enough space to perform. I left for a couple of hours, returned to find a black screen. When I first turn computer on, I get a green light on monitor for 5 seconds, then it turns amber. The tower light is amber, only.

Wow, didn't expect answer that fast. Sadly, my computer will not come on at all. How can I get all my "stuff" out of it, if I buy another computer?

  • maxtcat Mar 12, 2009

Of course, the main problem with my computer is the loose nut in front of the keyboard! I'm a 65-year-old Grandma, and, while your answer makes sense to me, I don't have the background knowledge to comprehend it.

You are a GENIUS! That is the best solution ever. You have made me very happy. This going to the library to use the computer is getting old. Thank yoiu!

Hi Maxtcat!

If it tells you that there is not enough wont help if you deleting or defragmen it. You need to clear of memory, not hdd space.
I think that the memosticks isent in best shape. If you cant get in the operative systen to shut down backgrund running programs then you need either to put in more memory or upgrade to biger memosticks.
MY guess it that the sticks have done their work and its time to replace them.
What kind of memostick do you have in your pc?

Good luck

    Hi again maxtcat!

Well, you can get all things you want from tah computer to a new one. Since you telling us that you dont know anytthing about computers i wont even try to explain how to do it, But i will tell you what to do:) When you buy that new computer, tell the store that u have one condition to buy it, you want them to help you tranfer your files (the files you selected) to the new computer. :) they will help you with that, that dosent take very long time do for them. If they dont help you, take both the old computer and the new one to a pc-repaire shop and they will do it for you. It will cost you a small fee.

Let me know how it goes:)

    Good luck Ma'm

The memory it is referring to is RAM, not hard drive space. You may have a bad memory module; one easy way to tell is, if your computer comes up at all, right click My Computer and select properties, it should display on this screen how much memory the computer thinks it has. You may need to get some new RAM.

My contacts r gone and wont save any says not enough storage space when downloading any apps

When you do have an Android phone, and the phone is telling you the memory is full, you only can free memory, by deleting apps from the main memory.
If you thought I can buy a phone with less memory, because the SD cards are very cheap and will extend the internal memory, you made an error. New phones from Samsung now get more than 10 Gbyte of apps, you even can't remove. So only about 5 Gbyte is free to use for other apps and messages.
Next phone? Take one with lots of internal memory, if you like to install lots of apps.

Nokia 5230- (1) When i try to send a text/reply "Not enough memory to perform operation. Delete some data first."(2) When I try to make a call, "Memory full. Delete or move some data from C:...

hi, yes and no is the quick answer, basically its telling you either your message out box is full or you have used a lot of hte memory on the phone, try going into messages via the menu then go into sent or ot box then choose delete and if you then highlight the message you want to delete then press settings and choose mark if you then do this to all the ones you want to delete then when you have finished you can choose delete and it will then delete all the ones you have marked.

now for your second question, im afraid their is no way of changing the settings to allow you to change the amount of time the messages are kept, you can change the settings so it dont save any sent messages at all but this can be a problems as you will never know what you have sent, the best thing to do would be to go through your messages say every other day and delete the ones you dont need.

now if you free up some memory on the phone by deleting things like inbox, outbox, sent messages also delete any pictures you dont need and even delete any ringtones you dont need doing this will free up memory and it will then store more messages on the phone than it is storing now

let me know how you get on or if you need furher assistance ok

please can you rate this solution, many thanks

It takes 5 minutes for my computer to boot up. It's a 7-yr old Dell with XP. Also, I've been getting a message "Virtual Memory Minimum too Low". What can I do to fix it or should I buy a new computer?

After seven years Windows tends to accumulate lots of "trash" in the system, especially if you installed a lot of programs over the years.
First step I would suggest is to try a good disk defragmentation software. You can download and install a trial version of PerfectDisk, or a completely free Auslogics application:
Run it several times and see if it makes things better. If the improvement is not enough, a good move would be to get someone experienced to save your personal files somewhere safe (a USB disk for example), then format (wipe) the disk completely and reinstall Windows from scratch + all the updates + the software you really use.
Seven years can be a lot, if you are after power-hungry modern applications and games. However, if you just want to use it for simple stuff, it can be quite enough. You don't provide the specs, but a simple RAM upgrade may just do the trick of making the machine comfortable enough to use.

Why blackberry curve doesn't keep messages, only holds 20 messages and erases old ones automaticly

It's because your phone memory is too low,
you need to delete some useless apps on your phone and free up some memory, when there is enough free memory, your blackberry will be able to store up to a few thousand emails without deleting them
( I have tested this and it works)
Blackberrys are built so when memory starts getting too full, the phone automatically deletes old messages and calendar entries to fee up memory so the phone doesn't freeze.

Hope this helps

I get "virtual memory low" message and cannot boot.

The real solution to this is going to involve spending some money to buy some new memory. It should cost about $30-50 depending on type and amount. 256Mb is not enough for Windows and other software to run. I would recommend buying at least 512Mb additional to add. Before you purchase open up your machine and look to see how many memory slots you have and how many are currently used. According to some specs on the internet, here is what you have.

Maximum Memory 2GB Memory Slots 2 (1 bank of 2) Install in pairs non-removable base memory 0MB Machine name: Dell Dimension 3000
CPU options: Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Celeron
Chipset: Intel 865GV Chipset
HD Bus: Ultra ATA/100
Front Side Bus options: 800MHz FSB
Memory Speed options: PC3200 DDR400 184pin SDRAM DIMM
Special notes: The Dimension 3000 has two different bus speeds each of which takes different memory. You cannot mix the speeds. Please check the speed on the memory modules currently installed, or use our "Check Your Computer" to find the correct module.
It is simple enough most anyone can do this themselves, and I could walk you thru it, otherwise you would need to take it somewhere, but my recommendation would be to do it yourself and simply ask me or others here for advice. Let me know if you want help to do this.
Good Luck!

ibm thinkpad does not boot My IBM Thinkpad 600 (Type 2645-310) stops and hang during bootup. What happens is: 1. LED test, then green Power on and orange battery/charging 3. RAM OK (Responds when I take out /put in different amount of RAM and displays correctly. I have 128 + 32 removable, + 32 internal not possible to take out) 2. I can hear fan, CD drive and evt diskette drive. If I use diskette drive the LED wil give 1 blink, if I use CD drive it will give 14 blink. 3. No cursor seen, but this is displayed: Upper left show the amount of RAM present: 196032 KB OK Upper right IBMs logo in blue; IBM Lower left shows "ThinkPad(R)" in large letters and red dot over "i". 4. Then a "rrrrrr" sound from the loudspeakers after a while, this is in fact 28 clicks shortly after each other. Then nothing more happens. Diskette and CD drive is OK (But can not be used because bootup is never finished). I hear CD speed up and then down again but nothing more happens. No effect in booting with bootable diskette or CD, "Live Linux" CD or else. Backup battery OK (3V) and if I take it out I will be asked for correct date and time when Power on. I can then use keyboard or TrackPoint to set date and time, and after that hangup at the usual point. Starting without battery, HDD, CD drive and removable memory sticks makes no difference in symptoms. Pressing and holding F1 before and during poweron and startup (in order to enter BIOS and selftest) has no effect. I could not find help on IBMs home page, but maybe I did not look at the right place. Is somebody able to help me?
