SOURCE: 2 1/2 Briggs......doesn't run smoothly....surges at all speeds.

Hi, Check that you have the correct spark plug fitted or fit a new one as it sounds like your plug is getting hot then shorting out.
Sometimes the magnito can do this as well. but I would start with the plug.

SOURCE: Briggs & Stratton engine on Murray lawn mower

I always replace the air filter if its a paper element, and even if its a foam element I replace it rather than clean it. That said, engine stumbling is rarely and air flow problem - but it could be, so having a new filter assures no air restrictions.

I would drop the carbuerator bowl. On the bottom of the carb, near where the fuel line comes into the engine, should be a nut. Removing this nut allows the bowl to drop off the carb. Some engines the bowl screws off, you will have to look at the bowl. Often the bowl has sediment or sludge buildup inside. Cleaning the bottom of the bowl can prevent that sludge/sediment from plugging the intake tube. Even on newer mower models this is a common problem, the gas line tubing interior breaks down and the inside of the tubing can start degrading - ending up in the bowl as sludge.

After cleaning the bowl, I would add one ounce of fuel line cleaner to a full tank of fuel and run the entire tank of fuel. This will clean any deposits or "varnish" from the interior carb parts. Doing this and the first step will assure your carb is clean and functioning.

If that doesn't help, then I would look at the spacing between the magneto and coil assembly. If you want to do that I'd like you to write down all the model numbers and serial numbers on the engine nameplate, that way I can give you specific directions.

Hope this helps,
Gregg

SOURCE: Engine only runs with choke full on. Dies when off full choke.

Hi Dave, it sounds crazy, but try this. Check your gas cap. It could be clogged, causing a vacuum to occur in the tank, and therefore not allowing the carb. to take on gas. It usually take 10-15 min. for this to occur. The next time you run the mower and it starts to stall out, loosen the gas cap and see if it begins to run again. If it does, then you know that the gas cap is clogged.

SOURCE: Cleaned the Briggs & Stratton Riding Lawn

kehmahcliff:
It looks like that your valves need to be maintenanced. This can be done by small engine repair shops. They should have the proper tools.

Also the "timing" of the spark and the fuel injection could be a problem. I hope this helped you.

Greetings Joe

SOURCE: I have a 4 hp Briggs and Stratton engine - stops running with gas

01 Sounds like you are describing the primer as being on the front of the carburetor air filter body. The line you describe is probably used to force air from the primer into the carburetor or into the fuel tank (a box of metal about 6" long by 3" wide by 3" deep?) on which the carburetor body mounts, from your description.
02 The engine will shut down with a little bit of fuel in the bottom of that tank. You should be able to remove the fuel cap, located on the top of the tank, just to the left of the carb and see into the tank. The carb does draw fuel from this tank as it runs.
03 How long does it run before quitting? If it runs ok and you get a small yard done and the engine does not emit black smoke, that might be normal.

Looking to see if 12.5 HP briggs and stratton mount holes are the same as 16 HP briggs and stratton can these engeins be fitted across different lawn tractor platforms i.e will the Craftsman 12.5 B/S fit...

The bolt patterns are the same, space should not be a problem going from the OHV to the flat head. The only other thing you should do is physically measure both crankshaft extensions (the part that sticks out the bottom of the engine) making sure that they are the same length, diameter and bolt hole is the same.
The muffler might be a concern depending on how the Cub muffler was oriented.
As in any engine swap there may or may not be some modifications you have to do ie: throttle and choke arrangement, fuel line routing, alternator capacity and wiring etc. so I will say yes it SHOULD fit without modifying the tractor and/or frame and it can "be fitted across different lawn tractor platforms"
