SOURCE: Cub Cadet 997 self propelled mower with 6.5

Might be just a loose head, Check that first, are the bolts tight? If loose I would clean head and install new head gasket and torque to specs. (In inch pounds).

SOURCE: i have a cub cadet push mower with a 173cc ohv

most likely a sheared flywheel key, pull the cover off the flywheel and remove the nut that holds the flywheel on. The key slot in the flywheel should line up with the key in the crankshaft if not pull the flywheel and install a new key, or take it to a small engine repair and they will do it for you. If the key is good, reassemble the flywheel nut etc and check for spark at the spark plug and see if the spark plug is wet with gas if you have spark and gas and the flywheel key not sheared and it still won't run, you may have an internal problem

Cub cadet 173cc ohv engine is not self propeling

it is either the belt or cable. Remove the belt housing and see if the belt is in place and in one piece. move the propel lever back and forth with the motor off and see if the opposite end is moving like it should at that connection.

Cub cadet lt 1042

Some of those cadets (like those with the Command 20) have a compression release mechanism on the cam which is intended to make that engine crank easier but disengages once the engine fires up. It's a plastic part and is prone to break, resulting in a lot of strain on the starter motor. Interesting design, bad materials. Sometimes the engine will start anyway but this is not a good idea to operate this way. Pull the valve cover. Look at the motion of the exhaust valve when you turn the engine by hand. It will look similar to the motion of the intake valve if this part is broken. If it's working correctly, you should see the exhaust valve open slightly just after the intake valve closes. I'll attach a video to show what it looks like. Replacing the bad cam is a bit of work but not terrible.

Engine on Cub Cadet lt1045 stopped and now only turns 3/4 then drags and then frees for 3/4 then drags etc. What could be the issue

If this is Kohler engine...
and the battery is good, volts and amps...the compression release on the exhaust cam gear may be broken.
If so, the cam gear must be replaced

Will not try to start acts like spark plug isnt firing cub cadet cc500 173cc/6.75ftlbs push mower

Change the spark plug and the air filter. Also be sure the gas is new. If the gas has been in the mower all winter drain it out and put in fresh gas.
