HP Photosmart C4385 All-In-One. This will print, but I cannot get it to scan. I have it plugged directly into my computer via USB. When I open the scanning program, it says that the scanner cannot be ''initialized.'' My scanner has worked before, but after moving my small office to another room, I cannot get it to work!
Try this :
At first try to Copy something from the printer to get the hardware is working or not.If not call hp and Hp will replace the printer if the printer is in warranty.
If it is working. Its software problem.
Now there is 2 probabilities. 1>The digital imaging moniter(situated at the bottom right hand corner, with a green round and a chk inside,..is either not there or the digital imaging file is corrupted) 2>Issue with the printer sw . .............................. But the very thing you can do is try copying something from the printer which shows the hardware functionality of the printer.
Now for the 1st>> goto computer>>drive c>>programfiles(programfiles 86x for vista 64 bit) >>hp>>digital imaging >>bin>>hpqtra08 ....double click on the hpqtra08.Now try to scan again.
Didnt work. Now for the 2nd opt>> put the sw cd if you have right click explore ..(goto step 3) but if you dont have the cd you can download the sw from hp.com >support and drivers..extract the file and goto run(search bar for vista) type "%temp%" and then click on folder starting with 7z....now goto step 3.
step 3.goto util folder>>ccc>>unistall l2 but make sure you have to unplug the usb first. >>Small black box will appear and press enter...and wait it will unistal the printer scan driver part. >>goto printers and faxes folder under controlpanel (printer for vista)...chk if there is any hp printer any more...if there is any printer not in use..delete them. >>restart the sys and then goto printer sw cd drive or u can take out the cd and put that back again. >>A installation wizard will appear. >>click on add a device and only connect the usb once the sw tells you to connect......this will surely work if it had worked before other wise there is some problem with the cd.
In this case download the sw and reinstall the sw but unistall the prev sw.but you have to unplug the usb first.
let me know. Best wishes suvrajit

To use the scan features, the HP All-in-One and computer must be connected and turned on. The HP Photosmart Software must also be installed and running on your computer prior to scanning. To verify that the HP PhotosmartSoftware is running on a Windows computer, look for the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon in the system tray at the lower right side of the screen, near the time.
NOTE: Closing the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon in the Windows system tray can cause the HP All-in-One to lose some of its scan functionality. If this happens, you can restore full functionality by restarting your computeror by starting the HP Photosmart Software.
The error message 'An error occurred while communicating with scanning device' appears on the computer running Windows XP.This error occurs while using the HP scanning software.
If the error message appears on the computer while scanning from a networked product, click here to troubleshoot scanner communication errors for the networked product (c00897542) (in English). This document does not cover the communication error message on networked products.

You may have to remove the printer software and reinstall it. Be sure to turn off firwall when installing software. Also, configure firewall to allow printer and scanner as exceptions, or turn off firewall when trying to scan
scanning through bluetooth is not possible
bluetooth module only pairs the computer and printer and has link only to the basic driver of the computer
so you can only print from it
if you want to scan you should connect te usb cable or use a wireless upgrade kit
Ok - the reason this error pops up is because there is a software issue going on. If the software is correctly installed you will see options for where the scan will go in the computer.
Having said that there are several things that can cause a problem between the printer and the software;
1) You are connecting the printer by USB to router - you may print but will never be able to scan as this is not a networkable printer. Connect it directly to your computer and recomplete the setup portion to configure the scanner.
2) You have not finished the setup. At the end of the installer you can setup the scanner but if you skipped this step you will have to redo it in order for it to connect. Click on the device manager in your dock and then next to information and settings there will be a little wheel. Click on the wheel and go to setup assistant. Complete the assistant and try to scan.
3) The printer is not grabbing the new software options - leave the printer turned on but unplug the power cord and wait for 30 seconds. Plug printer back in - when you do this it should initialize and will look to the mac for changes and the options should load.
4) Software missing - You MUST have the software for the printer installed for scanning function. Adobe and other programs cannot replace it - it has to be installed.
5) Software is corrupted. Uninstall the software (uninstaller is under applications in the HP folder) and then download (www.hp.com) and install the most recent full feature software and drivers for your operating system.
6) If all these steps fail you may have an issue with your computer and it's TWAIN drivers.
Don't try to scan from the printer control panel. You need to launch the "HP Photo and Imaging Director" from your computer. I have HP Photo & Imaging SoftwareVersion 2.0 installed which I believe was obtained from the HP site for the C4385.
The scan function works fine if you use this software.
I had a similar problem recently... You have to actually install the scanner software. You probably only installed the print drivers, but not the scanner software. If you don't have the CD handy, go to www.hp.com/#Support. In step one select "Download drivers and software (and firmware)". In step 2 enter your model number (photosmart C4385) and then press "go". It will lead you to a page to select your operating system. Follow that link to download the entire CD (large file).
When you are installing the software, make sure to install the scanner software too.
