Have you updated a Graphic driver? Does it Dim on battery and AC? Look at power settings. Control Panel, Power. You could Rool-Back the graphic driver to see if that changes the problem. A Gateway mt6841 has Windows XP OS, right?

The problem is not the setting on your monitor...The problem is the backlight inverter located inside the upper and lower edge of your screen.. It is busted. The backlight inverter is the light source responsible for the displaying image on your screen. If these were busted.. then the only thing you will see is black screen.
It is very risky for you to replace it by yourself if you don't have the knowledge and the right tools to open the back of your lcd..My suggestion is to bring your monitor to a credible technician to have your backlight inverter replace. if there is warranty for your lcd, please avail this.
Hope it help..
Much appreciated if you rate this solution..thanks..
The native resolution of you monitor is 1440x900. If you previously had it set at a lower resolution (say 1280 x 720) the text would appear larger than it does now. You can change the appearance of internet explorer by using the Zoom function (Ctrl +).
Try moving the screen a little with your hands if it changes and you can see the screen as normal then you probably have a loose cable and you can open screen and rseat cable. If it stays white then you will need to replace the screen. You can the get screen on ebay.
Did you try changing your display resolution in your computer display properties ?
Right click anywhere on your screen backdrop, click on properties, go
to settings then pick the resolution that fits your screen the best.
You need to enter a lower resolution. The monitor you are on is incapable of using a resolution that high. If you cannot get back on you need to start in safemode. Then change the resolution to a lower one that your monitor can handle.
