I am guessing the
Vaio you have is a Canadian model, which has alternate keyboard drivers
for English and French. On these models, it seems the alt car key only works with the French
keyboard (durr). To switch, press the LEFT control key and RIGHT shift
key at the same time, then release. Now if you use the alt car key like
the shift key, i.e. hold it down then press another key, you should be
able to access the pink characters. To return to English keyboard, press
left-ctrl and right-shift together again.
Most of the time it is a keyboard failure. You can troubleshoot this by plugging in an external keyboard and seeing how that works, but most of the time it is your keyboard. They are not expensive on ebay, maybe $15 + shipping, and not hard to change
download the drivers at sony e support website...insert a bootable operating system..this will format your laptop and erase all files..once the operating system is installed, install the drivers...and your son could use the laptop without him seeing your files
