Question about Toshiba Portege 3110CT Notebook

1 Answer

Graphics are terrible when i play videos

I have an old toshiba portege 3110ct which i recently bought (second hand). it is meant to run on windows 98 or nt but i managed to install xp on it and it runs pretty fine but i have a problem with playing movies. most video formats (like avi mpg) played using vlc player or windows media player either produce very bad audio or the motion picture keeps freezing and jumping. sometimes vlc gives black and white colour for avi files which i manage to correct by changing the video output module but it still gives a jumpy picture and cracks in sound. can you please help me solve this. i have trident video accelerator graphic card in use.

i'd also appreciate if you know any light antivirus i can install as all the premium ones, (avg, avira, avast) slow the system terribly. i don't have protection and i'm using mcafee stinger standalone antivirus to clean a few viruses, trojans and variants

thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

Reset administrator password

Terry, we need to know which version of Windows you have?
  1. Try leaving the password blank if you're trying to log on to the actual "Administrator" account. Just press Enter without typing anything when asked for it.
  2. Enter the password to your account. Often, depending on how Windows was setup on your computer, the primary user (YOU) account will be configured with administrator privileges.

How do i get my toshiba portege to boot from a usb flash drive. When i power it on it goes to starting windows screen (Windows 2000) then to blue screen for split second then restarts the computer I bought...

Before the windows logo comes up, there should be a prompt to go into setup. Usually this involves pressing escape, F2, F8, F10, or F12, depending on the machine.
Once you're in the setup screen (it should look like a stereotypical image from a 1980's computer), there will be an an option titled "Boot". In here you can set the order of bootable devices your computer checks. Set USB to be above your hard drive. There are always instructions on the bottom of the screen on how to change options and navigate around.

Cant diplay 32 bit on thoshiba portege 7100

The computer very well may not be capable of displaying 32bit graphics. It is afterall over 10 years old. Very few Pentium III 500Mhz machines with 64MB of Ram (as your computer shipped with from Toshiba) would have had a graphics adapter stout enough to do so.

I have Toshiba Portege 3110ct w/WIN 2000 installed. Have forgotten admin password- I added a wireless card and tried to set up a home network when I locked myself out inadvertently

Are you able to get in in Safe mode (F8 on boot) , maybe try Administrator with no password. Then you could reset your admin password.

Antivirus for low capacity notebook

With those specs, I think you will be hard pressed to find something that won't slow down the system. A lot of Antivirus software now a days requires more RAM than you system has just for real-time scanning.

Sunbelt Software makes a product called Vipre that is relatively new and doesn't consume a lot of RAM. Take a look at that and see if that works for you.

If that doesn't work, then I would consider trying something perimeter based like the Dlink SecureSpot device. http://dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=486 That isn't ideal since when you leave you network you will be unprotected, but if you leave this laptop on the same network connection all the time, then this just might work for you.
