New laptops come with a User Guide. What is the Product Number?
This can be found on the white Service Tag, on the bottom of the laptop. P/N = Product Number

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

If the units are running slow, you can do some maintenance on them to speed them up.
First, run defragmenter on both units.(in Safe mode)
Download ScrubXP which will automatically clear your temp, cookies and TIF files.
Download CCleaner and run it.
Run your Anti-virus program: download the free version of AVG. (Great virus protection.)
Other programs to use are SpyBlaster and Winpatrol, all of which are free.
This should help, if you feel that you need to format and restore the units, youcan do so. But try this first.
Please remember to rate all users who assist you for free :)

Compaq? Oh, then you are going to have a hard disk partition with the recovery files, so you don't need the disks. You have made it, that's great, because in case you cannot access the hard disk, you cannot initiate a recovery without ordering recovery CDs for your model from HP.
There are a number of ways to do it.
Try pressing F9 at startup (when the Compaq or HP logo shows up), and if it doesn't work, see the key for System Recovery at the bottom of the screen. It will recover, just follow the instructions on the screen.
Also, you can insert the first disk anytime, or boot from it when you start the PC up.
Or, you can use the Recovery Manager software in the PC that is pre-installed and it will help you to do a System Recovery from the files on your recovery partition.
Please rate this answer, I badly need it.

what disk do you have?
one should be OS disk and a other should be drivers and software or a recovery disk.
if you have a label recovery disk start with that.
if you have an OS + driver disk start with the os disk.
put it in cd and press a key when it says so.
here is a very good guide to follow
after you installed the os then run the driver recovery disk just click next, its not that hard.

What they don't tell you when those are sold is that you should get yourself an external USB cd/dvd drive. Thses work very well and are slim line products. If you have a spare laptop cd/dvd drive, Ebay sells the housing and usb cable to convert an internal laptop drive into a USB external.
