Re: Microwave type icon comes on , microwave does not run
You cannot operate a microwave with door open because the radiation from magnetron is very dangerous for your health.
Regarding general microwave troubleshooting , see my solution below:
Test the high voltage capacitor, the rectifier diode.or the magnetron. If all this are fine, test the control board.
Thediode and capacitors can br tested. The capacitor must bealloweddischarge before testing, or you risk to get electrocuted, evenifpower is off. Capacitors can get discharged by shorting theirtwocontacts. Before replacing the magnetron test also the control board. Replace the magnetron if the checks and all of the high voltage component tests are good, but the unit still does not heat.
All locations, and description of this parts can be located using the diagram here: Counter top.
Parts must be tested to find out what is wrong.
Remember that microwaves are potentially dangerous devices if not repaired properly, the job must be done by a competent person. A microwave energy leakage test must always be performed when the oven is serviced for any reason.
a 6ya Repairman can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Repairman (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

All microwave ovens have safety switches on the doors to prevent the oven from running with the door open. Many have up to 4 of these standard microswitches. They do go bad, and can be replaced rather easily. Open your oven up, and match the existing switches with new from any electronics supplier. New switches are $2 to $3 each. A microwave technician will want to charge you on the order of $100 to come out to see what the problem is, go back to his office and order switches, and then come out to do the replacement.
TIP: Go to the web and type www.partselect.com enter your model number then scoll to page 4 of 7 and when you come to BACK COVER, click to enlarge exploded diagram on left. Veiw enlarged diagram at top of page. You can print the entire diagram by holding your pointer in the upper left hand corner of diagram. Select the print icon. Now you have what you need. Part number 993 is the mounting plate attach to wall. Open your cabinet doors above microwave, have someone hold it, and remove the screws going through cabinet into top of microwave. Pull down and out slowly towards you until the unit slides off the support arms. If you found any of these suggestions helpful, please rate my solution. D. Lange
Just checked the GE website. Had the same problem with my 5 year old microwave. GE website says to close and open the door quickly three times. First time I did this it didn't work. Second time I closed the door with some significant force and reopened it more quickly. Worked. Unplugged the microwave, plugged it back in, still fine.
Do not run the microwave with the door open. You will be cooked. Sooner or later, if there are enough microwave ovens, (and there are), everything that can go wrong with them will, eventually. There are several interlocking safety systems built into every microwave so that they won't work with the door open. Yours may have failed. I've never come across one, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. It may only have a fault making the fan and turntable operate, which can sound like it's working with the door open. Either way, get it checked or get a new one. This assumes that the microwave isn't actually supposed to do what it is doing under normal conditions or current programming. Refer to manual/instructions if unsure.:::Spiceweasel.au
