XBR 4 vertical black band, ghosting/smearing, getting worse.
At a year and 2 months from new, my KDL52XBR4 developed problems. About 3 weeks ago on startup, there was a shrill whistle for about 2-5 minutes then gone - noise never came back. About 7 minute after this first morning startup and thereafter, a fuzzy black band instantly appears in middle of screen, 1 foot wide. Rest of screen gets darker. Perimeter starts to go black. A few days later, also started smearing, ghosting, not refreshing on right perimter, overlapping images. So it's gradually getting worse. After 5 minutes, TV snaps to perfect, no problems at all for the rest of the many hours the TV is on. Qualified technician looked at malfunction for 5 minutes, said LCD screen with attached `TCON(?)" needs to be replaced. Cost $2900, Sony will only help $900, so I'm out $2000, with only a 90 day warranty !! In my past experience (I'm retired mech./chem engineer), power supplies provide different voltage levels to radio/TV's. If voltage levels are off until defective power supply is replaced, warms up, or starts working right, won't that throw off flourescent back light starter and voltages running circuitry ? I've had only one diagnosis, and hate to spend $2000 on a 10 minute diagnosis. He didn't hook up any analysis machines, and was adamant about problem. What's a TCON ? Please advise. Thank you, Jeff

Hi, I have a similar issue which is progressively getting worse. My TV is on a sliding mount, and interestingly enough, sometimes I can "jilt" it by hitting it and it clears. This seems to me to be a connector problem, where heat (thermal expansions, electrical resistances) can introduce degrading signal. Now if I could find a manual on how to take this damn thing apart.......Certainly does't solve the warranty issue, but at least gives a reason for one to kick their TV.

The screen is failing. A conductive strip from a flex connector to the glass panel is losing contact when cold. Any warranty left? extended warranty? Usually not repairable, screen has to be replaced and cost as much as a new set....
Its a TAB bond Problem with the LCD. You can take apart the TV and install a rubber Bumper to put pressure on the TAB. TAB bonds always get worse... I dont know how long it will solve the issue... but u can get a little more life out of it.
Rember when working with the TV the voltages can kill!!
Heres a link to see someone fixing.
I have the same TV...same problem...common problem...unless u ask Sony.
I have the same issue. Bought the TV 1/08 and it started showing those exact symptoms about 3-4 months ago. It generally progresses and gets worse. You can try to fix it as it's some kind of TAB connector issue, or keep calling Sony so that the 52" owners of the XBR4 and 5 series get the extended warranty just like the 46" owners received for the same series. If enough of us keep calling, they'll have to act.
This is the best solution for your problem as a 40 year experience with wires etc.
Go to the source of your cable signal connector .
Open it and clean the terminals with emery paper , sand the end of the cable shiny clean from corrosion , get a new barrel connectors with gold terminals if possible lengthen the ends of the cable , insert and tighten good, use thick rg-16 or rg 40 cable with good insulation ends crimped professionally with a crimpier or buy ready made , not from dollar store. Get a gold plated professional splitter if you need one or two , it will cost about 15 or more each . Make the cable runs as short as possible, using the thick good cables. If needed get a signal magnifier. From radio shack or the source etc. Connect them good and tight . Ground the splitters . Problem solved , you will get crystal clear channel 2 to 7 including 3 and 4 . Isolate the TV cable from other cables and power wires.
Similar problem with an eleven and a half month old LT-40148. Approx. 1 inch vertical banding line on left side of screen on all inputs. After about two weeks, same problem on the right side of the screen.
Fortunately this occurred two weeks prior to the one year warranty expiring.
Called Mits customer service and they referred me to an authorized service center who I happened to have dealt with before.
They picked up the set. The front panel (LCD screen ) had to be replaced. Set was gone for two weeks as parts were not in stock. There was no charge. I hope this screen last more than a year.
Had this same issue on right side of 52" about 1 inch from side but had 3 vertical lines that disappeared after 40 minutes. Have Samsung LNT5265FX/XXA and about 16 months old. LCD Panel itself had to be replaced to fix it, fortunately had extended service plan
Called ghost lines or banding. I researched on toshiba thread LCD screen bad. I have same problem purchased HL196 4/07 problem appeared 1 year and 9 months ago no extended warranty. If still under warranty call toshiba. LCD screen more expensive then orginal price of TV. Should file class action lawsuit for selling defective screens. Lot of people having same problem. goforth2953
