SOURCE: my iphone won't charge it
I found the solution:
I was having pretty much the same problem. My iPhone 3G needed charging so I plugged it in using the usb cable and AC adapter. Hours later, when I went to check on it, the display was stuck at the red "dead battery" indicator, and would not charge.
I tried performing a hard reboot several times (holding down the home button and power button for 10 seconds), but that didn't help at all. I thought I was going to have to do a factory reset and restore, but I decided to try one more thing first... I put the phone into DFU mode and when iTunes automatically launched, instead of proceeding any further, I cancelled the operation and rebooted the phone. It then started up properly (although still in need of a charge) and is now charging as it should.
Hope it works for you as well. If so, please pay it forward and post this solution for someone else that is having the same problem : )

SOURCE: My iphone 3Gs is not
Do a hard reset.
Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac.
Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.
As soon as the screen goes black release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
