First off, have you tried playing Blu-Ray movies/games instead of DVD's? If you have and only the DVD's work then it sounds like the "blu ray" part of the drive has died. In the PS3 blu ray drive there is a lens for blu ray movies/games and a seperate one for dvd/cd's. Sounds like the blu ray lens one broke. The cost for repair of this $150 dollars if not under warranty. Now before calling sony try this.
Update your firmware (if you aren't running the latest already). Yup, this overwrites some of system software that may have been corrupted.
First, back up your game saves, and any music you have on your HDD. Format the PS3! Yup, again this fixes corrupted files on the HDD by forcing the PS3 to rewrite them.
Buy a Blu-Ray cleaner and try it.
Sadly if these don't work, you will need to give Sony a call, and have that coffin mailed your way.
Your Blu-ray drive has gone bad most likely. Try inserting a blu-ray movie to double check. Also, try to play a music cd or a dvd. I usually see that cd's and dvds will play but the BR movies and games will not.If your concole is less that 1 year old, contact sony for a warranty repair. If it is older than 1 year, they will repair it for a cost.
First make sure the DVD is not scratched or dirty. Get a cleaning kit and use it to clean the laser off inside your PS3. If it won't work after you clean the CD/DVD then your Blu-Ray Diode has burned out (a very common problem with the PS3). The PlayStation 3 uses two different lasers to read a disc. One of the lasers inside is used for standard DVD's and CD's and the other one is used strictly for playing Blu-Ray. The only way to fix your PS3 at this point is to replace that Blue Ray laser lens. If you do not have electronic repair knowledge I would recommend paying the $150 to have Sony replace it. Your PS3 is under warranty for one year from the purchase date.

lasers not workin properly.
try and give it a clean but if not your gunna ave to stump up about 50 quid for a new one.
use this video for cleaning it
and while you have the drive open you might want to do this test on your laser to check if its working ok :)
obviously dont bother with this if your consoles got warranty
hope this helps
The PS3 uses a different laser for DVD's, Blu-Ray disks, and CD's. It's
quite likely that just the Blu-ray diode has crapped out. have you
upgraded to firmware 3.10
For the player to work perfectly the
lens needs to be clean. One piece of dirt can cripple your PS3 and end
up with your PS3 not playing games. This dirt needs to be cleaned off
the lens occasionally to avoid you having ps3 problems loading games.
Try these steps to resolve this issue:
You could be facing a lens related issue or corrupted firmware problem
Update your firmware (if you aren't running the latest already). Yup,
this overwrites some of system software that may have been corrupted.

3. Try cleaning the blu-ray drive lens with a Blu Ray Lens Cleaner
if this does not help, i suggest should be send to Sony for
repairs in case your PS3 is under warranty your replacement drive may
be covered still you need to check with PS3 customer support, Laser
replacement would cost you around $130.
Hope this helps, and please do rate my solution, Happy Holidays and Happy gaming ahead!
The problem is all in the settings. You probably have a 1080i television that cannot display in 1080p. To fix this go to the main menu and go to:
Then Blu Ray Disc and make it turn the Display BD in 1080p 24hz or whatever. Once you do that, start the Blu Ray Disc again, and you should be able to watch it. This all happened because your tv doesn't display 1080p.
