I have had my Sony STR-DE975 for years now. Recently I took the top off and used a can of compressed air to remove the dust build up inside the unit. Now, the left speaker cuts in and out. Sometimes it...

It is possible the integrated output module on the left channel could be cutting out due to heat build up. I suggest you compare the temperatures of the left and right components.

If nothing seems to be heating then it could be a dry joint - an imperfect soldered joint, that can also be sensitive to heat or vibration. Engineers often cure problems simply by systematically resoldering joints. A dry joint is usually obvious when it is viewed under a strong enough magnifier and the area can often be found by tapping the components with something like the handle of a small screwdriver.

Such problems are usually power amp related but the problem could be a loss of signal from the preamp. When the channel cuts out you need to be able to trace the signal through the circuit to find where it stops. An engineer would use an audio signal generator to inject a signal at the input and trace it with an oscilloscope or a signal tracer.

Spraying freezer spray onto selected components could prove useful...

The amps in the receiver turn off and on all the time. The center channel rarely works, and the left & right channels turn off & on every 10-15 minutes as well as the subwoofer output. Is there...

loose connections, issues. disconnect center and front speakers from this receiver. turn on with rear and subwoofer. horrible sound but the point is it will eliminate the speaker issues and confirm loose connection if the receiver continues to behave the way you described.I have repaired a few for loose connections.

I have hooked up my ps3 with optical audio and it is cutting out during br playback forcing it to unlock the audio stream and decode it again.

Try another cable, reverese ends on the one you have, try another optical input. Something is corrupting the bitstream.

Mechanical alignment of optics is critical. I always use coaxial to avoid that, PLUS I can use garden variety RCA cables in any length, splice several together to reach my components and even split them with a Y-connector to share the signal with two devices (but you have to be careful to only USE one at a time, leaving the other powered off). Try any of THAT with optical cables. Not to mention the ridiculous cost.

No S-Video nor RCA Video output to monitor

First, you've checked and the monitor will display other sources plugged into the same monitor input?  And you've tried plugging the receiver into another TV?  Otherwise all I can tell you is that the receiver does not convert.  So if you want to see S-Video on your monitor, you have to input S-video.  If you want to see RCA output, you have to input RCA.  Best of luck.
