My averatec 2300 is melting the AC power cord

I got my computer over 2 years ago...no problems until now... the original AC adapter broke...I got a new one...and since then the laptop is heating so much that the plastic around the AC power cord is melting...
I touched the jack in the computer and I burned myself... any way to fix that?

Okay, the driver for the system fans (hal.dll) needs to be reinstalled.

Do the following:

Press the windows key and R
Type in command
In the command prompt that comes up:
Type in cd C:\Windows\System32\
Type in taskkill /f /im "hal.dll"
Type in del hal.dll
Then restart your computer

What taskkill does is kill the system fans application that is using the driver so you can delete it. After your system restarts, Windows will automatically reinstall the system fans driver, and the problem will be fixed!

It's very possible that there is a short in the connection where the adapter actually goes into the laptop. This could certainly cause the heat, as well as the lack of charge/power to the machine. It could also be dangerous if it gets too hot (a friend actually had his laptop ignite into flames from a similar issue, and I had an HP that melted the plastic around the power cord insert.) However, the problem could be with the battery itself or the cord/adapter. As a short term solution, you might jiggle the power cord at the connection to see if that makes your flashing red light stop (with mine, the contacts and the insulation were both worn, causing contact where it shouldn't have been - hence the short and heat, while denying contact where it should have been - thus the lack of power.) If you find a position that works, some tape could hold it in place until you can get a more permanent solution. If you have access to another machine that can use the same power cord (and that you know works), you might test your cord on that machine to see if the problem is in the cord or the actual laptop - Best Buy or Geek Squad can also do this if you don't have access to such a machine. If the problem is the cord, you should be able to find a new one on ebay or at a tech website. If the problem is determined to be in the machine, it could be either the battery itself or the connection point. The battery is certainly easier to replace, but for some laptops, you can find replacement connection points (this obviously requires taking the machine apart), again on ebay or similar, or Geek Squad should certainly be able to do it if you are squeemish about messing with the inner workings of a laptop. However, you will want to start by figuring out where the problem is (or isn't) per the above.

Averatec 3700 notebook is charged but will not power on, nothing happens when power button is pushed even when power cord is plugged in

Try to remove the battery and turn the computer on with only the AC adapter connected. If it works then the battery is failing. If it does not there is something wrong with the motherboard or the AC adapter. hopefully it is just the AC adapter. Try to borrow an AC adapter from a friend or anybody else. Make sure that the current and power rating is exactly the same. Or else you might end up with a burned laptop. It the known working AC adapter works, then it is your charger. Buy a new one.

hi

find out if the fan is blowing air -- tun notebook over and see if the air is blowing out from under it, while notebook is running. I would say that the heatsink fan may have stopped working, and it shuts down the computer as a fail safe response, so that the CPU or mainboard is not damaged.

other possibility, ---- the power connection (when inserting the AC adapter cord) may be faulty .to find out : remove the battery from computer (while computer is off). Turn computer on, insert the AC adapter cord. If notebook turns on, its fine -- if not and disconnects intermittently, you have a faulty AC adapter or power cord or combination/hop this helps

thanks for using FIXYA

Give Fremontek a call (I have no affiliation with them)
They know Averatec's better than anyone else I know, and can frequently diagnose via phone.

My bet is that youmight be able to "reset" or may need a power management board.

Computer does not turn on when I press the power button

do u have the power adapter plugged in, or are you using battery power? the first thing i would try is disconnecting the battery. just compleatly remove it and set it aside. then try starting it with the adapter plugged in. sometimes the batteries go bad and are corrupt. i had this happen to a compaq laptop a few years back. after i got rid of the battery it worked fine. if it works u can always buy a new battery.

My 2300 started same problems in Dec 08 (almost 2 years old) Its an overheat problem! With black screen the two blue lights an bottom left are on. Leave powered up and in an hour or so will shut down on its on, then will start back up normally but shut down again in about an hour.Correction 1. pull off back cover, blow out the dust. 2.Go to set up (F2 on power up and run fan cal) 3. Take the back cover off you will feel how hot the CPU and hard drive are that is because vents are too small for an aging laptop. Now take the cover and drill a double line of holes on each side of the hard drive vents, Next over the CPU (where the fan blows in air, drill a triple line of new vent holes in the cover). A 5/32 drill will be about right. You may also wish to purchase an inexpensive Belkin laptop cooler. About $19 at Best Buy. This solved my problem as I do like this little one for travel

Start my notebook averatec 2300

hi dear

Ouch! Have you tried taking the battery out to see if it will run on AC power when the battery is not installed? Sometimes a bad battery can kill the system.

Do you have a meter that you can measure the output of the AC adapter with to see if it is correct? If not, any chance you could swap adapters with someone for a while to see if theirs works on your computer and vice versa? A local shop may also be able to test your adapter to see if it's working.

oke

Travelmate 2300 won't power on

The problem could be your bezel.  Remove the 3 screws from the hinges from the rear and you will be able to remove the black strip above the keyboard (after removing the screws, make sure laptop is layed wide open)  once removed, press the button on the motherboard under where the power button is.  If the unit still does not power up, then your motherboard is bad and needs to be replaced.  If it does power up, you need to replace the bezel.
