get and ohm meter and see if you got voltage coming in on the b pin and when you turn the key on see if you hae the voltage coming from the pin that is marked with a s,

there should be a B,L,S,G,etc.

Test seat switch

Disconnect it from the seat. Keep the plunger down with your fingers as if you're sitting on it with the seat, and start the machine. Let the plunger go and it the machine is running while in gear, the switch is bad. Also, you can use a multimeter to check continuity with the plunger up and down. That will tell you if it's working or not.

You didn't indicate what model number you have. You can download a manual here:http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals/21205/CRAFTSMAN-Lawn,-Tractor-L0306104?brand_name_search=917272672+CRAFTSMAN if the 917272672 isn't the right model go to www.searspartsdirect.com and enter you model number. When the parts come up look over on right had side of page for button to select manual. To start, you must have foot on clutch, PTO disengaged. The seat switch doesn't come into play until the PTO is engaged. Check for voltage at the B terminal on the start switch to be sure fuse is good. From there check the S terminal when you turn key to start. From there it goes to the clutch/brake switch (when depressed) then to pto clutch then to solenoid. GOOD LUCK!

Difficult to start -- bad kill switch?

You have 3 safety switches located on the tractor, any one of which can cause the tractor to not crank over.
I assume the deck lever is not engaged, you are sitting in the seat and you push the clutch down when trying to start?
Start by lifting the seat and disconnecting the seat switch, push the clutch in and try to start.
Start there and we'll go from there.

Craftsman riding lawn mower 42 will not stay on after taking foot of brake pedal

the "safety deadman switch" is the problem, however, we call it simply "the seat switch" - flip the seat forward and you will see wires going to the middle of the seat, the connector is probably slightly unplugged - wiggle it back on to make a good connection - this is a verry common problem [the unplugged switch is telling the tractor that there is nobody on the seat and it kills the engine]
