Okay, the driver for WiFi (hal.dll) needs to be reinstalled.

Do the following:

Press the windows key and R
Type in command
In the command prompt that comes up:
Type in cd C:\Windows\System32\
Type in taskkill /f /im "hal.dll"
Type in del hal.dll
Then restart your computer

What taskkill does is kill the WiFi application that is using the driver so you can delete it. After your system restarts, Windows will automatically reinstall the WiFi driver, and the problem will be fixed!

Setup 64bit pass phrase on Belkin router. All wireless devices say,

Do your other devices support 64bit wep, and are you selecting that as your encryption type on each device. For example I know on my cellphone I have to specify the type of encryption that is used. You might also log into the router, just to double check the encryption type and the pass phrase (even if you are spelling it right).

Cam connect

Try connecting to Wifi at a public access/non-secure location. Use the quick start guide procedures or goto where they have a step-by-step and even a video demonstration.

If you can connect at a non-secure Wifi location then there is a good chance you don't remember the pass-phrase exactly right on your home wifi. You will have to change the pass-phrase on your home router and then change all the systems using it.

I have a Linksys wireless-G router. Geek Squad installed it for me some time ago to my laptop. Now I have an e-reader and would like to download books, but it is not connecting to any websites. The...

All you have to do is to find the pass-phrase (or password) for your wi-fi. Start your favorite browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla etc) and at the address line type and hit enter. This address is the typical address for linksys routers. At the page with the router's settings that will come up, go at the wireless tab and after this at the wireless security tab. There is an area for pass-phrase, write down at a piece of paper the phrase in this area because this is the pass-phrase you have to provide at the e-reader when it will ask you for a password to connect to the Wi-Fi.

How do I secure wireless router ... currently open .. I'm attempting to restrict piggy-backing for security reason.

Which router do you have. You have to first open the administration page of the router. Better to do it with a laptop or computer attached to the router physically with a cable as the wireless configuration might corrupt data as the router will disconnect when you change the security setting. Default ip for router's are , you can see your manual for the correct address and even the username and password would be provided in the documentation. Once inside the administration select Wireless and then Wireless Security may change according to manufacturer. Here you have many choices like WEP or WPA, i think for home networks WPA is a better choice as WEP is easier to break. Select TKIP under that, then you should enter a pass phrase. This is going to be like your password. It has to be minimum 11 characters long.Save settings and check if the pass phrase is asked for when connecting to your router. If it does you have secured your wireless connection.

What is wpa pass phrase while setting wireless printer

WPA with a Pre-Shared Key (PSK), also known as personal. PSK is entered as a pass phrase between 8 to 63 alphanumeric characters in the ASCII format at both ends of the wireless connection. Although PSK accepts a minimum of eight characters, for proper security, it is a good idea to use ample length and should not use a commonly known phrase. This phrase is used to generate session keys that are unique for each wireless client.

WPA pass phrase is a password for the wireless network to make it secured. You can obtain the WPA pass phrase when you access your router. Check the manual of your router for the address, username and password of your router. Go to wireless settings, you will see ther the SSID or Network Name, Network Key or the Pass Phrase and Authentication (WPA/WPA2/WEP). You can personalize the SSID,Network Key and Authentication. Remeber that for you to connect wirelessly the Authentication and Network Key on the router should match the Network Key and Authentication of the Printer or Computer.

Thanks for using Fixya,

What is the passphrase needed to connect to my computer

A pass phrase is a series of alpha characters SIMILAR to a password, but they are usually limited to a certain number of characters.

These are "hashed" or converted to a numerical value for use as a numerical code used as a "password" for example the WEP code used by DSL modem to connect to the internet.

You USUALLY could enter the numerical code as Hexadecimal BUT with a pass phrase it is easier to remember something that is an alphabetic word or phrase and let the software convert it to the numerical code. USUALLY no spaces are allowed in such a pass phrase.

I have internet with time warner so have linksys router wireless'but when a try to connect to other computer don,t work

First, check to make sure that you can get Internet through a wired connection, if you can't then wireless won't work either. Second, if you can, then try connecting to the wireless without using WEP or any security. You can turn this off by going to in your web browser while wired to the router from your PC and go under wireless security. If you can connect from an unsecured access point then set up a WEP key with a pass-phrase and when you are asked for the pass-phrase from the PC use the the hex key 1 that is generated by the router instead of the pass-phrase. You should have no problem connecting. Thye wizard that comes on the configuration CD will not set up your wireless correctly, you really have to configure the system using the IP.

Laptop connection problems to wireless router after reformat

Hi Drew,

I am assuming by access key your are referring to the pass phrase. The easiest way to approach this would be to use a cable to connect directly to the router from your laptop and confirm the wireless configuration on the router. You may have the pass phrase correct by the router is using WEP and your laptop is set to WPA or visa versa. Confirm the wireless configuration on the router then unplug the laptop from the router and change the configuration for you wireless settings on the laptop.
