Constant Alarm Light on Oki ML 321 elite

We have a constant red alarm light when we switch on the oki printer, it seems that the ribbon trys to run then makes a funny clicking noise and goes back to its original position on the far left, wherever you leave the ribbon to begin with.

Also, there is nothing blocking the carraige to stop the ribbon running.

Is the alarm solid or flashing?

are you using genuine Okidata ribbons?

also try powering the printer on without the ribbon, does it still show the same alarm condition?

Check/clean the carriage sensor. This part is under the head/ribbon holder assembly. You should also check the tensioner to the black guide/railings when the carriage assembly runs. This is the one with the gear.

A blinking alarm usually means an hardware error of some type, such as an obstruction on the printhead, or a bad motor or such.
When you have a blinking alarm light the other lights that are on will give you an error code that will tell you what the alarm means. You will need to look it up at Okidata.

SOURCE: Alarm light Microline 320 Turbo 9 pin printer - won't print

We swapped out the printer for another one we had in the office that was working. The new printer also got the alarm light. From that we concluded that it was a bad serial card. We swapped the serial card from another printer, and the original printer started working perfectly. Now we just need to find out where we can purchase another serial card, as we have no more 'spares' around here.

Try taking the ribbon out and power the unit on, does the alarm light go off ?
If so the ribbon could be jammed.

Alarm flashing goes to prop

This is a "spacing alarm". check that the printhead moves freely from left to right. If not, remove the ribbon and try it again. If it is moving freely then it should be ok, if not it will need most likely the space motor or the main board replaced. In some cases it is also possibly the white carriage cable that runs from your main board to the space motor. Hope this helps.

Remove the ribbon it may be jammed and if this does not work your printer has a problem with either main logic board or carriage motor.
