SOURCE: mfc 440cn printer says 'ink empty' to new full ink cartridge

The usual obvious fix is to buy a new catridge, insert, power off machine, then switch back on to reset any sensors. But if the circuitry on the machine itself is faulty it wont fix it.

I used to own an MFC 260C. It had a perfectly good full ink catridge in it, that was working fine, until...it suddenly did not recognise the cartridge anymore.

I pulled the machine apart and found that 2 of the 4 sensors on the cct board at the back of the cartridge housing were loose. These sensors pass light through the exposed part of the cartridge to see if ink is there. So if these are faulty, you will never clear the "No Cartridge" or "Ink Empty..." or "Near Empty Ink ..." messages on the MFC260C and prbably other similar printers in the MFC range.

Why did they fail? Because the soldering on these sensors was poor quality.

I would never buy another Brother machine because of this, also because they design the machine to be totally useless unless all the ink ccartridges are full. Shame on you Brother, and kiss my *** for the $160 pile of junk I bought off you that was only on its second batch of cartridges (ie very little use)

Excess waste toner

For MFC-9840, it was simple to find and empty the box (http://www.howtofixcomputers.com/forums/printers/brother-mfc-9440cn-waste-toner-box-reuse-288524.html) and assume it is equally easy to do once you locate the box on your model.

How do I reset the counter for the drum unit on a Brother MFC 9840-CDW. It says to replace the drum but the unit is printing flawlessly.

On the TN-155 toner cartridge, a mechanical 'flag gear' that will reset the counter for each individual cartridge when first 'triggered'.
After each page print, the appropriate counters are incremented regardless of toner content (that is why it is still printing 'flawlessly') and after a pre-determined count has been reached, you will get a warning to change the drum as is will then be notionally (not actually) empty.
Before you decide to reset the 'flag gear' on the drum, make sure you are not actually nearing the physical empty state ... it might be a wiser decision to purchase a refill kit which should come with instruction on how to fill and reset the 'flag gear' (this needs some dismantling of the drum cartridge) or buy a compatible or genuine toner drum cartridge.
In any case, Google 'Brother drum flag gear' for more information.
Good luck!

I just installed a new drum and toner cartrideg last week and the error message says drum is near end. Should the toner cartride be replaced?

Hi there,

After replacing the drum and toner you may need to reset the drum life of the machine. This is how to reset the drum life:
Open the front cover where the drum and toner are located. Press the clear/back key. Lcd should show Replace Drum? Then press 1 for yes. Lcd should show accepted. Close the front cover the press stop/exit. Lcd now should show the date and time.
Hope this helps. Rate if it works. Thanks

Washer fills and empties but won't wash or spin

hello,
If the motor is spinning very rapidly when it should just be tumbling then it sounds like the tacho has gone or come loose on the motor. It may well need a new motor or there could even be a fault with the main programmer

Mp 460 tryin to insert ink for the 1st time

Please follow the steps below:

1. Locate the exit hole at the bottom where there is a large plug.

2. Also locate the vent hole at the bottom which exists on the same side as the large handle on the top of the cartridge.

3. Turning the exit port towards the lap place the vent hole to the right and vice versa. Seal the exit port with a black electrical tape.

4. Take out the handle on the top of the cartridge. Inside you will see two metallic seals, the smaller one round and the larger one rectangular. Either remove the seals or make holes in them.

5. To fill the syringe bottle with ink squeeze the syringe bottle and the needle be inserted into the ink bottle. Relax the grip and let the syringe **** the ink into the bottle.

6. Taking the syringe bottle slowly inject the ink into the sponge deeply through the rectangular hole till the sponge saturates.

7. Also inject ink in the round hole till the outer chamber is full. After injection seal the round hole with black electrical tape carefully. Also seal the rectangular hole with tape.

8. Put the plastic handle back on the top. Take the cartridge to a sink and remove the tape from the bottom. Let the extra ink drops flow out.

9. Printer should be installed now.

Have a great day!

How long will the drum last on a Brother HL 5140 when the yellow drum light starts flashing

I have reused the drum for three life cycles and the print quality is still good. Just reset the counter until the print quality suffers because the cost of the drum exceeds the price of a new printer. According to Brother to reset the counter
  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Press and hold the Go button on the front of the printer, at the same time turn the printer power on.
  3. When the Toner light is on by itself, release the Go button.
  4. Push and hold the Go button again, release the Go button when the Paper light is on by itself.

My Dell is saying replace drumcart, drum full of waste toner, where is that located. Is there someplace I can look at a schematic.

On my Dell 3100cn you have to replace the drum as routine maintenance. I think it is every 12,000 sheets. If you examine the drum unit (in a 3100cn) you will find that there is a compartment in the unit that gets filled with used toner.. It is fairly small, but runs all the way across the drum unit, at the pointy end. On fhe 3100cn there is a blue arrow on either side of the drum unit to show you which way round to put the drum unit and the arrows are each printed on pastic cover held on by two screws. Undo the screws and you can empty the waste toner directly into a plastic bag.

The drum unit has a chip in it (on one side). That tells the main machine it is full or, may be, it tells the machine when it thinks it should get full. If it is the latter, then the chip won't change its tune and you will continue to get the error mesages.

Have fun

Low toner/toner empty

Toner cartridges have more then just "toner ink" they also have developer and sometimes a chip that says how many times the cartridge has been used.
Also some refill places can be a bit dodgy so I know it might not seem like the best thing right now but try buying a real replacement cartridge and if that doesn't do it beg and plead to return it saying it was the wrong model.
If it does fix it then you might have a bad cartridge that either has the "chip" or the cartridge itself is simply worn out and in need of developer as well.
