I have the color and b&w cartridge installed....i have had the color cartidge in for at least a year (i barely ever print in color)
suddenly it starts telling me that i have the wrong color cartridge installed and won't let me print, scan or event get out of that screen
i've tried cleaning it, unplugging it overnight, and nothing is working

Re: ink cartridge not recognized
First, I would try to remove both of the cartridges, close printer, power down, and remove power cord and let sit for 5 minutes. Reconnect, reinstall the carts, and see if problem still occurs. Otherwise, I would also go to this link and select "check to see if I have the latest drivers" at the top of the page and update your software. Are you sure its exclamation mark?.. This warning message related to print head. (warn out). When you are replacing ink tube assembly use dummy print heads to do the priming (new ink tubes are empty & they have to fill with ink).. Action: Remove all cartridges and print heads, switch on the printer follow the screen message.(Insert cartridges first next dummy print heads).once its recognizes cartridges then it switch over to print heads,insert dummy print heads. Once printer recognized the dummy print heads, printer will perform priming, during priming dummy print heads will filled with respective inks.(follow the display message)Remove dummy print heads & insert normal print heads. Wait till printer recognizes print heads, load the paper & wait till performs the calibration, once calibration is successfully done issue closed. If calibration not successfully done, check align print out for which print head is not printed properly, replace it.. Pl ensure that minimum 50% ink levels required in cartridges before performing the priming. Best of luck..
The MP600 does not use the 40 or 41 cartridges, it uses individual color (and black) ink tanks. But other models (MP190, MP460, MP470, etc) do use these cartridges. The error message you are receiving indicates that the printer does not recognize the cartridge you installed as a valid black ink cartridge. This can mean that either the cartridge is faulty, or that the printer has a problem.
I would suggest trying another new cartridge, and if you still get the same error, to contact Canon for support options if the unit is still in warranty.
Turn off the printer, wait one minute then turn it back on,
Then press the left button on the panel, the transparent one to the left of power button. It will print a status page. Check the dates and information under each color that is failing.
The ink cartridges MAY be outdated. Printing the test and information page without the computer connected fools the machine since it can't get your computer date.
If the cartridges are outdated, then change your computer year back to 2005 or so, reconnect the printer cable and send something to print, once the printer prints it out, reset your computer to today's year.
You will need to do this procedure whenever you turns off the printer. (Disconnect cable, change computer year, print, reset computer date).
