Question about Acer Aspire™ T180 PC Desktop

Acer Aspire desktop computer that won't turn on.

I purchased an Acer Aspire Desktop Computer brand new in 2000. While it's an older model, I only used it for 9 months. One day when I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't start. Does this system have a reset button or can someone tell me what I should I do, other that ''throw it away''? The model number is VKP23V and the manufactures date is 98/02/04.
Thanks for your help.

Clarifiaction to previous post. I don't get any lights and the fans don't move. I checked the power chord and outlet and they work on other computers. I removed the side and checked for loose coinnections, but it still won't turn on. I wasn't able to locate a reset button.

    Thanks

There is a switch on the back that you can slide to 115 or 230.

    Thanks again

I wouldn't throw it away. What does it do? have you checked the power supply? Do any lights show up on the unit?

  • Deb Collins May 11, 2010

Was it sitting unused for any length of time?
Did it just suddenly stop booting up?

Do you get anything? Beeps, fans running, anything on monitor?

The first step in trouble shooting is to see if you are getting power to anything in the computer and you do this by listening to your computer as it starts up. It is usually good to remove the side cover or with some older computers the removable case portion, to be able to watch for fans turning and to be able to better hear the drives. If you get absolutely nothing then it is most likely a failed power supply. If your motherboard or mobo does not have broken capacitors then I would suggest starting there. Let us know what is exactly happening and we will try to diagnose it for you.

It appears you have a bad powersupply. You'll need to replace it with one of equal or greater watts.

Since you have other computers available you may want to try swapping out a power suplly to see if that cures this computer. You just have to make sure of two things. The replacement power supply is the same or greater wattage and that it has the right connectors (newer computers made changes to the connectors).

Also make sure that you did not accidentally press the on/off switch on the back of the power supply. I did this once and felt kind of silly. Not all power supplies will have that switch, but a lot do.
Let us know what you find.

This is most likely a power supply problem. sometimes a power surge will cause failure, even when the computer is not turned on. You can replace the whole power supply, or you could check the fuse that is inside the power supply first. on rare occasions the fuse will be the only thing blown, but that doesn't happen often.

If you really want to reset your computer to the state it was in when you purchased it then you will need to get a hold of some recovery disks. I found a site that sells a number of recovery disks for various systems and got the link to the specific one for your model of computer http://recovery-disks.com/acer/acer-aspire-m1201.html. They will send you specific instructions on how to use their recover disks.

I have a Acer aspire desktop computer m1100 and when I bought it did not come with a recovery disk and I did not make the cd because I was unaware of how to do it. Now the computer will not boot with out a...

by default the hard drive should have a recovery partition. go to the support section of the manufactures website and you should find detailed instructions of how to boot to the partition. if that option has been corrupted, you can purchase a recovery disc directly from acer. i've ordered nearly a hundred for customers in the past and have never paid more than 20.00 for a disc or disc set.

below you will find a link that will allow you to enter your product serial number and direct you to the purchase of a factory recovery cd/dvd.

Hi, I own an Acer Aspire M5630 Standard desktop

Hi,
A branded computer uses Original Equpment Manufacturer (OEM) version of Operating System, hence if you change any hardware it will go to the trial version of OS automatically. Hence, you have to use the full system recovery disk to reinstall the OS.

Acer Desktop won't boot after recovery

Why not use your new hard drive as a storage disc. Reconnect your old hard drive as it was before. Hopefully it will boot the computer again. If it does, shut down the unit. On the primary bus, set your old HD as master & the new HD as slave with jumpers. Boot the unit & hopefully you will now have a "c"&"d" HD showing in My Computer. Remember that your are dealing with Windows & what should happen & what really happens can be two entirely different things.
