Its due to incorrect color system setting.Try changing the color Mode of the DVD from Menu of it or from the TV (like PAL/NTSC/Auto).Ensure both DVD and TV color system is unique. Better choose Auto from the DVD player

My player only plays in black and white. why

Check all your buttons on your machine. There should be a color adjustment knob located on it, where you can have anywhere from sharp color right to black and white. Adjust your color until it comes in with the prefered color you want.

VHS plays in colour and DVD plays in black and white.

there is a circuit in the color section to put the tv to black and white if the color subcarrier is missing from the broadcast signal.
it is called a color killer and needs to be adjusted.
it is for a technician to do.
it operates off the 3.58mhz color subcarrier.

Color to black and white and back again

Since you're using a composite cable (yellow RCA) that carries both luma (brightness) and chroma (color) information, it's not the cable that is the problem.

That means it's either the DVD player itself, or the TV. If you have another video device (VCR, etc) that you can connect to the TV, try that. If the other device also goes from color to black and white, then it's your TV. Otherwise the problem is your DVD player.

Since your TV only has mono audio (white RCA, but no red) I would recommend getting a new TV if the TV is to blame.

Sony dvp ns50p dvd player

If you are using the s-video jack to connect the DVD to the TV, the jack could be loose or the wire could be bad. The s-video cable has 2 signals, the black-and-white (luminance) and the color (chroma). If the chroma signal is not getting through, the picture will be in black and white.
