Question about Saeco VIA Venezia

The steam coming out of my espresso smells burned

Made my wife a nice frothy cup of steamed milk last night, but it smelled and tasted burned even though I didn't boil it. I did a test and just let the steamer run--the steam coming out of the wand smelled burned.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem - latte looks fine but smells and tastes burned. Doesn't seem as if it should need descaling as it has only been used about 4 times. Any other solutions?

Water smell

You may have some residue inside the steam pipe from previous uses (e.g. milk). If you know how to remove the steam pipe, this will be easy to clean. Otherwise, you could try a pipe cleaner (depending on the type of steam wand).

You can also try running the steam pipe into some water, but be careful not to overheat the boiler (consult your manual... it may say you can't steam continuously for more than a minute, or even less).

I left my Artisan espresso machine on between brewing coffee and making hot milk and got an electrical burning smell. Should the machine be switched off if not in use for quarter of an hour or so?

Always off when not being used, it only takes 4 minutes to heat from cold and that can be while you are sorting coffee and cups. Get the electrical smell investigated, these have a problem with seals in the steam boiler which causes switch problems from the steam.

My steamer wand has an awful odor everytime I try to steam something! I have cleaned it (even soaked in baking soda!) and the problem won't stop. Anyone else have this problem?

This is a common problem for the commercial espresso machines, Due to lack of cleaning of the steam wand after they finish frothing milk.
The milk flows back to the boiler and the water gets contaminated with milk.

Does the steam smells like rotten milk? If the answer is yes, you have contaminated water and or lines.
If not may be there is a lot of IRON in the water.

Run a descale cycle.

After you are done frothing milk, wipe the steam wand with a wet towel and open the steam valve for 2 seconds, close it and that's it.

When I steam my milk it tastes burnt and there is a strong burning odor.

The boiler needs to be cleaned, it is contaminated with milk. Check the water from the tea spicket, if it smells funny or it is discolored then the boiler is contaminated, if not then the problem is at the steam wand and steam valve.

My Rancilio Silvia developed a terrible burning smell. The water still comes out of the steaming wand. I have only been using the steaming wand for the last month and not the espresso maker. I have been...

Sounds like the machine needs to be descaled and the boiler and element needs to be checked.
Was the machine left on for a long time?
If yes then the element needs to be replaced.

A burnt smell is filtrating my milk when I steam it..and it's discolouring the milk.

Yikes! that doesn't sound good. Please supply more details as to your steaming technique. In the mean time, I will just say that you should not steam above 150 degrees F or so lest you burn the milk. If you don't have a thermometer, but are using a metal steaming pitcher, keep your hand on the side of the pitcher as you steam. It it gets too hot to touch, you've gone too far. Good luck steaming! And let us know if you are having a different, more specific problem.

STEAM PROBLEM

Does the steam itself smell, or just the milk. If yes on the steam run the descale again. If no on steam then check the perfect cream wand the black plastic arm connected to the steam wand, dissamble and clean, make sure all the holes are clear.

Coffee tastes burnt/No steam for froth

I don't know about the burning business but I had the same problem with the steam wand. the first thing I did to solve this problem was to take small object like a needle or safety pen and insert it into the base of the steam wand. (I have feeling that most problems related to the steaming wand are due to deposits clogging the wand itself.) After I cleared out as best I could I used vinegar and water to help remove any calcium deposits. Sure enough, after inserting the needle into the wand steam began to flow again.
