Follow the below mentioned steps: 1 Download the Garmin WebUpdater software which is available via the link in the References section. Installing the WebUpdater software is only required once. Follow the instructions in the software installation screens to install the product.
2 Insert the USB cord into the Garmin device. Insert the USB end of the cord into a USB port on your computer.
3 Move the cursor to the Start menu of the computer and select Programs / Garmin / WebUpdater.
4 Follow the onscreen instructions for the Garmin WebUpdater and then wait until the program has installed the upgrades to your GPS device.
5 Close out the WebUpdater program and disconnect the USB cord from the computer and from the GPS.
That could be an update for maps or software..... software updates are free... new maps are from 50 to 60 dollars..... but do a software update first...if your maps are more that 2 years old i would buy new map
with the unit Off...... connect your gps to your computer using the usb cable..(usb cable is the same connection most cameras use to connect to computers)
your computer will detect new hardware (usb) minimise pop up box
go to www.mygarmin.com register your gps (free) it too will detect your gps model and let you update Firmware and Maps
it will tell you to download WebUpDater utility to transfer files to your gps... Done !

Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps.

There is a certain thing you can buy that has a cord that hooks up to your computer, and then you put your camera in the little holder and it uploads. BUT if you dont want to spend your money on that, yes you need a USB cord to upload. Your camera should have come with A USB cord, manual,CAMERA (:, a software disk, etc.
There are two type of maps in the unit. There is the basemap which shows the states and major highway and roads and then there is the actual Mapsource maps which shows the streets. If you go to Mapinfo and it doesn't show anything, then Mapsource maps are missing.
With the 2610 you can use a card reader for the Compact Flash Memory card to load the maps. This is much faster since the card reader is USB 2.0 while the Garmin USB is 1.1 Under device look for the drive letter which correspond to the Campact Flash card.
