I have an older walker mower with a 16 hp Koehler engine, sometimes it starts ok and runs other times when cranking you can hear like air escaping from intake or exaust valve just like a put put sound

check the wear on the rocker arm bushes and rocker shaft
possible it is so bad that the valves cannot seat properly or the valve clearance has been considerably reduced

Should have hydraulic lifters but the rockers wear on them,check for wear.

IF you did not keep that rocker gear and rockers together as units then the noise may be from the wear on the ends of the rockers not matching the wear for the valve ends. If you fitted 1 new valve and did not grind the rocker arm wear out that may be the ticking noise

Check the rocker shaft and rocker bushes for wear. have a leak down test done on the hydraulic tappets as they wear out and do not hold the oil as they should.

2003 Dyna wide glide making a ticking noise at high rpm's and has gotten progressively worse over the last couple years \

You engine is a pushrod type engine rather than the overhead cam design of most other bikes on the road. All Harley's are designed this way other than the V-rod models. As such, it has rocker arms to open and close the valves. These rocker arms have bushings that ride on steel shafts. These parts wear but the hydraulic tappets take up most of the wear but can't compensate for the looseness at high RPM's. This would be my guess. And, since I can't hear the noise, a guess is the best I can do. To find out if this is the problem, you'd have to take your rocker box covers off and remove the rocker arms and the shafts to measure the amount of wear in all the parts. The rocker arms can be "re-bushed" meaning you can have new bushings installed and reamed out to fit the new shafts you'll need.

I have a loud tapping in my front rocker box on my 2000 harley 1200 sportster custom i have pulled top and middle covers but the valve springs look fine and pushrods seem fine an thoughts?

I could be the bushings in the rocker arms and the rocker arm shafts. Bring the piston to top dead center on the cylinder that has the noise. Both valves should be closed. Allow about five minutes for the tappets to bleed down on that cylinder. When you can spin both of the pushrods with your fingers, remove the 5/16 inch bolts on the right hand side (pushrod side) of the head. This should allow you to push the rocker arm shaft out and remove the rocker arm. You may have to gently tap the rocker arm shafts out but it should not be difficult to get them out. Do not mix the rocker arms and their shafts up. Keep them together. Check the bushings in the rocker arms and the rocker arm shafts for wear. The bushings can be replaced and use new rocker arm shafts if this turns out out to be the problem. Check the face of the rocker arm where it pushes down on the valve stem for wear as well.

It was backfire'n thru carb i removed valve cover and saw that #4 exhaust valve rocker was REal loose and did'nt seem to be moving as much as the others i adjusted that rocker arm no more backfire and it...

It is probably still getting oil, but if it is not moving as much as the other exhuast rockers chances are the cam shaft lobe for that valve is wearing away.

Same thing happened to me. As it turns out the EPA mandated that most of the anti-wear (zinc and phosphorus) additives be removed from most motor oils. This is because of emissions and because thier presence can damage the catalytic converter. Diesel oils still have all of the additives. I have been putting at least one quart of shell rotella-T into every vehicle we own. Running pure Rotella-T in the one I just put the cam in for now.

Can the rocker arms of a 1997 jeep grand cherokee straight six be adjusted

Remove the valve covers. Inspect each rocker arm for wear, cracks or other damage, check the rocker arm abd dykcrum for wear, replace with new ones, they can"t be adjusted.
