I have a Dell pc but it won't boot up. When I switch it on a black screen comes up saying No boot device available strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility. When I press f1 the same message comes up, when I press f2 a list of menus come up but I do not know how to solve this. Can anyone help?

You should try a repair to your operating system.
The easies way to do this is to insert the XP disk into the cd/dvd
turn the computer on and select to boot from the cd/dvd player.
when you are asked if you want to run recovery console say no, and at the screen where it ask if you want to install windows tell it yes. at the next screen it will say that if you want to do a repair press r.
Follow the on screen instructions and hopefully it will find you earlier installation of xp.

You can download step by step guides on how to do this from the internet.

No boot device available- strike F1 to retry boot F2 for setup utility

you can try this steps to resolve your issue:
1. clean your disc drive with white cloth and alcohol
2. try to re-install the OS
3. if this won't work try to download another boot disk like EBCD
or ask a friend to create you a boot disc and try to boot your computer with it.

- This can rule out or confirm a Bad Windows OS disc, thus let's you install you Windows OS in the process.

4. try to re-install again the OS

Generally an indication that the Hard Drive isn't detected
Things to check, go to BIOS F2, reset defaults and reboot, see if the HDD is seen. If it is, the battery on the motherboard is likely dead and needs replacement (Watch battery at Walmart, 3 dollars)
If the HDD doesn't detect after resetting the BIOS, then most likely a Hard Drive failure

Primary disk drive not found

Check the connection of your hard drive and make sure it's plugged properly On The Motherboard.

Is this a SATA drive? Has it ever operated properly? If worse comes to worse, you'll have to reload windows from scratch.

My computer won't start up or get passed the boot up stage

If its the screen I am thinking, it may be because it cannot detect the Hard Driive, so no windows files to load.

- Reboot
- Enter the BIOS menu (usually F1, but think F2 on Dell;s)
- Click on the summary page, under IDE or HD can you see a label with a size e.g. HD1 800000 or does it say none - you can also see other devices from the suammry such as CD ROM ..etc Can you see all thse correctly?
- If not seeing the Hard drive you will need to remove the PC cover and check the IDE/SATA connectors are firmly in, in your harddrive and the other end to the mother board (could of come loose). If they are, there are still more things that can be don - but let us know if this is what you are experiencing first.

Seems to be a problem while detecting the hard disk. Please contact customer service if the laptop is in warranty.

Let me know what happens.

Got CPU from friend and it wont work

When prompted again hit F2 as the bios clock may be incorrect, which means your cmos battery needs changing, reset the time and save, exit for a re boot. Take the side off the pc and look at the motherboard for a flat disc shaped watch type battery and replace if required.
