You might be better off replacing the plastic base with a piece of 1/4" clear lexan (plexiglas). you'll be able to see through that.
Otherwise, you can make a simple jig that stops the trimmer at both ends (at the length of cut for the hinges) and controls the depth of cut by registering against the edge of the door. Make the jig base itself of 1/4' MDF or some such and longer than you think you'll need it to be so you have a way to clamp it or pin it down to the door.
If that sounds too complicated, try measuring the distance from the edge of the bit to the edge of the trimmer, in both directions, and marking the corresponding length away from the hinge position with a piece of blue masking tape or something, so you'll have an easily visible reference line when routing. You can mark it a little short and clean up the end of the cut with a sharp chisel.
Finally, run a test on a piece of scrap before you try to fit the hinge to your finished work.

I have a 7301 power unit, 7309 trimmer base, 7311 offset trimmer base and the 7318 tilt trimmer base. The problem I am experiencing is with the power unit. The shaft spins but once I use the lock pin it...

first things first, the lock pin has a spring that is supposed to push it away from the shaft after using, if it is not releasing there could be a burr on the shaft/pin or the spring might be missing. the electrical smell can be from the field or armature and the freezing up might be a bearing which can lead to that smell. I would suggest going to "dewaltservicenet.com" and you can download the owners manual/breakdown for this tool. I think that I saw list price around 63.00 for the trimmer so I would not put a lot of money in the repair. They are not that hard to take apart so let me know if you need more assistance and I will try and help

The motor is part # 3092 and the base is model 3091. When you put the two together it becomes a model 309. A parts list is here. http://www.ereplacementparts.com/porter-cable-3092-type-laminate-trimmer-parts-c-129_1861_1865.html

Will a Porter Cable 7312 offset base laminate trimmer also work on Model 7301 HD POWER UNIT

I think it's meant to fit the 7310 trimmer, as the series numbers are in sequence. But when I look at the parts list for the 7301 & 7310, they seem to have the same motor housing part number, which indicates they are more or less the same size, no?
Check at the following website, http://www.dewaltservicenet.com/SearchResults.aspx?q=laminate%20trimmer
They also provide the means to ask them a question, if you're not sure you want to risk returning an order, in which case you want to link:

I hope this info allows you to sort it out.

# Use a straight base. # Make sure the bit height is correct. To adjust the height, loosen the base and turn the wheel on the side of the tool. When you've got the right height, tighten down the base. # Rest the tool over the top of the work piece, then turn it on. # Push the tool forward to trim around the edge of the work.

Laminate Trimmer troubleshoot

There are several different bases you can use with this tool. One example swivels so you can trim edges at a variety of different angles. An offsetting base allows you to get into tight corners because the bit is located at the edge of the base, rather than in the center. When working with laminate, this particular base is great for creating a backsplash. You can cut around the edges of a circle with a roundover bit.

Laminate Trimmers Troubleshooting

Changing Bits: 1. Unplug the tool. 2. Turn the knobs on either side of the tool to loosen the base. 3. Remove the base. 4. Press the spindle guide to lock down the shaft. 5. Use a wrench to loosen the collet. 6. Remove the bit and collet. You may have to tap on the collet to loosen; careful not to tap on the cutting edges of the bit. 7. Insert the new bit and collet. 8. Use a wrench to tighten the collet into place. 9. Replace the base.
