Question about LaCie 500GB d2 Quadra 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Power cord buzzes and MACPro does not recognize it

The LaCie AC Power Supply Model No:ACU057A-0512 buzzes when it is plugged and seems to cause the Hard Drive to 'tick'. Is that a problem? The 500GB LaCie d2 HD QUADRA light blinks when it is plugged in and my MACPro is not recognizing it.

This is a fault in the power supply itself, I have just repaired one of these power supplies successfully.
The fault is caused by the failure of the filter capacitors on the 12V supply rail, and if the power supply is left connected to the mains supply (In our case 240V 50Hz) without the drive connected as a load, the unloaded output voltage will exceed the voltage rating of the capacitors, causing their failure. The failed capacitors had very obvious bulges at the top, and one was beginning to leak onto the PCB.

The filter capacitors on the 12V supply rail are rated at 16V, and the cpacitors on the 5V rail are rated at 10V, and when operated without a load, the 12V rail rises to approximately 19V, and the 5V rail rises to approximately 8V. All output filter capacitors are 1000uF, and 105deg C temperature rated.

I repaired my power supply by replacing all of the filter capacitors on the DC low voltage output rails with 1000uF 25V capacitors. Be careful to only fit the 105 deg C rated caps, as they operate at elevated temperatures in an enclosed environment with no ventillation to cool the power supply.
To ensure that the repair was reliable, I also replaced the filter capacitor on the 5V rail with the same 1000uF 25V, even though that capacitor showed no immediate signs of failure.

When reassembling the power supply, care must be taken to ensure that parts like the ferrite cored transformer are thermally bonded to the aluminium heatsink with a smear of heatsink compound.
When the power supply was first powered up following repair, everything was normal, the green power LED came on as usual, the supply outputs both came up OK, and the unit was not making any buzzing sounds, completely silent. The HDD now operated as normal when once again powered from this power supply.

This was the fix for my particular LaCie power supply model ACU057A-0512, and the supply once again works normally.

Is it worth fixing a Lacie Power Supply or do they just fail again due to capacitor degredation?

Heat is a big factor in capacitor failures. Suggest you mount all drives in unit with a nice big fan giving them the mother of all blow jobs. That will do the trick!

I have an old LaCie d2 160GB Hard Drive Extreme with Triple Interface (circa 2005)... I have lost my power cord and I can't seem to be able to find one online to purchase...Does anyone know where I can...

Hello,
your drive can be used with any D2 or Big Disk power supply as well as some LaCie Porsche power supplies (you need to make sure the connector is the same).
Searching for LaCie Power supply on eBay will give you a few hits that match your needs.

Dead hard drive

Try unplugging the usb connector and plugging it back in. Your pc shouls recognize the installed component automatically. Also, some external hard drives work like normal pc's do: hold the power button in longer until something happens. Hope this helps.

CONSTANT BUZZING SOUND

A buzz in the sound can come from having your audio cables to close to the power cords. Or a problem with the cable box. A problem with the Ac power supply like a bad input filter can cause a buzz. If it changes when you turn the volume up and down it is not power supply. Hope some of this helps.. It is hard to be sure without hearing it

Fried HD?

Yep, it's probably fried, a little too much juice went in.
While the drive itself might be ok, the external casing is another story.

Try opening the case and removing the HD and plugging that in on your PC directly as a slave drive.

Power Adaptor for 500GB LaCie P3 HD USB 2.0 7200RPM 8MB USA?

Both power adaptors are 4 pin, ITHINK that the Porsche that you have is the same as mine which has the smaller (4 pin DIN) plug 34W power supply.
But check on LaCie's site: http://www.lacie.com/asia/products/product.htm?pid=10857
Hope this helps.

No Power

Hi: That could be the power cord itself shorting out right near where it plugs into the set.

DO NOT hesitate removing the plug from the AC wall plug, since fires have started this way!!

If its the cord you can replace it or if its inside the set it will need repair.
