How do I know if the condenser fan is working or not?

  • lsaari Mar 12, 2009

All the heat seems to be coming from the top of the fridge (inside)
I tried the turbo cool and that does send in some cold air.
I reset the temprature setting to 37 and after a few seconds it reads 88

  • lsaari Mar 12, 2009

The display goes dark sometimes but it comes back. It seems to go dark like a shut down programmed due to heat.

I am trying to see if the turbo helps. I did shut it down for 5 minutes and nothing but if this does not work I will try the 30 minute shutdown

  • lsaari Mar 12, 2009

The turbo cool is cooling it a bit but the readout on the right reads bc with part of the b missing. Is that maybe ec or something?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, the 'no display' is significant. It indicates that the electronic controller of the unit is faulty hence no display. The electronic controller as the name implies is the brain of the refrigerator telling it when to switch on/off any of its components.

If it were just the refrigerator side not cooling with the freezer still running good, then it would be the evaporator blower/fan that draws the cold air and pipes it to the refrigerator section.

Exploded diagrams to help you locate parts is available here.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Hi there,

better check the condenser fan was working.

    The
condenser fan is located under the unit. If the fan is malfunctioning,
the refrigerator or freezer won't cool properly, or it will run
    continuously or not at all.

Test the fan with a VOM set to the
RX1 scale. Disconnect the electrical wires to the fan motor and clip
one probe of the VOM to each fan motor terminal. If the meter reads
from 50 to 200 ohms, the motor is functioning properly. If the meter
reads higher than 200 ohms, the fan motor is faulty and you should
    replace it.

While you're working on the fan motor, make sure the
fan blades are clean and unobstructed. If the blades are bent,
    carefully straighten them with pliers.

Refridgerator will not get cold, frezzer portion works fine

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it'll be the control.

Freezer working, but refridgerator is not cold. The fan works.

You most likely have a failure in the defrost circuit. One or more of thee possibilities: Heating element, defrost timer and/or defrost thermostat.

Fridge isn't cold

Hi,

if the compressor is running your ref. should be getting cold. Their is a defrost timer but when it is in defrost the compressor shuts off. I think you do have a leak.

thanks,

Vegetable and fruit crisper drawers freezing foods

I had the same problem. Apparently the problem is the main control board. According to the technician that came out to fix mine there is a design flaw and these boards are very sensitive and can blow a circuit or malfunction from the slightest power surge. What happens then is that the control board doesn't "tell" the fan to turn on and off at the right time so the fridge and freezer warm up too much before the fan kicks in and then it cools everything down but since the fan isn't running at the correct intervals and circulating the air all of the cold air settles to the bottom which causes the produce in the drawers to freeze while the top shelves get warmer. I had done a fair bit of research before calling GE and came to the conclusion that this was a common problem. So I pressed them and was able to get the fee for the part waived (before I made the service call appointment) which was around $150. The part now has a 5 year waranty which I find funny, because I'm not sure why it wouldn't have that upfront as my refridgerator is only 2 years old. Whatever!! Unfortunately, unless you have indepth knowledge of refridgerator repair there is no way around the service call and labor. Anyone buying a new model of refridgerator (any company) should consider an extended waranty. The service tech also told me that all refridgerators made after 2001 are required, by law, to have an electronic mother board which in all likelyhood will fail at somepoint prior to when you are ready to buy a new fridge!

Good Lucak!
