Question about Gateway 510 XL Peak Performance (510XLPP) PC Desktop

I have a Gateway 510xl and would like to upgrade the power supply

I have a Gateway 510xl and would like to upgrade the onboard power supply. I just replaced the video card with an Nvidea 7600 Gt which requires 350 watts as opposed to the 250 watts my computer comes with. The onboard power supply is an FSP250-60atv. Gateway part #6500836. What do you recommend? I was thinking of an Athena 550 watt (ps-550-server-uni for $95.00 from Holland Power Supply) but I don't know if Athena is reliable, and although the model I just listed is supposed to be compatible, I am not sure. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks. Rb

Changing out power supplies is not that difficult task. Upgrading to a 550 Watt power supply would be a good idea because it will give you more power than you need at the moment. You can google the power supply with the word problems with it and see what comes up. The main thing to be sure of when selecting a new power supply is to make sure that you get one with the appropriate connectors for your hard drive, motherboard and processor. For example if you have a SATA Hard drive then you will need a PSU that has SATA power connectors. Most newer power supplies (PSU) have these. The box should list what connectors it has.

Computer will not turn on, flea light is on but computer will not power up

There are several possible problems. One could be the power supply is going bad. Another could be that the motherboard and/or CPU are burnt out. I'd recommend taking it to a PC repair shop so they can get into the PC and test for sure. If it's the power supply then that's a reletively easy fix with the part ranging from 30-60 bucks depending where you get it. If the motherboard or CPU have died then most places will charge too much to repair it so you may wish to get a new PC. On the bright side it sounds like your hard drive is fine, so you can get the data transferred if you do get a new PC

Best video card upgrade for Gateway GT4024???? Stock computer....except ram upgrade to 2x1gb....want to increase the video handling from the slow onboard video

Your upgrade options for a better video card are really dependent on how much you want to spend.  You have a PCI express x16 slot which is what your are going to use.  Visit and you can look up video cards by manufacturer, memory amount, and even filter it by how much you are willing to spend.  Here's a link at newegg for "the best video card upgrade":

Since there is a newer PCI 2.0 Express connection on newer computers, you can get your video cards cheaper now.  You will notice a huge improvement with any video card you choose since onboard video is about the worst.  Just remember to go into the device manager and disable onboard video card after you install the new video card.
Good Luck

Hi nas2,

You can purchas a SATA power cord addapter that can assist you. The cord is called SATA Serial ATA Power Cable. Unfortunetly, Best Buy™ does not carry these cables. You can however google the cord and order it online for cheap.

Video card for the gateway 507gr

Yes, your computer specifically supports:

PCI Express 16x and
PCI Express 1x

The 16x is the long one and the 1x is the reallly short one. Most likely the card that you get will fit the big slot. Be careful not to upgrade too high though, because if you do you may have to upgrade your power supply as well. Ask someone at gateway or a local shop for a recommended card for your system.
