when you next turn on your system you will have to quickly hold your finger down on the on/off buttons simutaniously for around 4-5 secs till you hear some beeping noises, hopefully this will start again with no problems.
Ok, if it is simply the image that is freezing and it is still staying on then there is hope for the PS3.
If however it is turning off with 3 beeps and flashing the red light then that is serious.
Please try the following if it is just the display freezing :
Turn the PS3 off into standby (red light on)
Press and hold the power button. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and then beep one more time and turn off into standby mode (red light on)
Release the power button
Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and this time there will be 2 quick beeps together. Release the power button when you hear these 2 quick beeps.
The PS3 will start up asking you to connect the controller via USB and press the PS button. Do this and then continue.
After doing the above a menu will load with 6 options. Choose option 3 "Restore File System". This will re-install the PS3 software if it has become corrupt. Ignore any messages about corrupt hard drive, this is normal. If this step does not work try the above again but select option 4, then 5 if that doesn't work.
One of these options should get your PS3 up and running again.
Does the computer emit any beeps? If so, how many beeps?
One quick loud BEEP, at start up means that all is loading OK. If you get more than one BEEP sound, than you could have Memory ( RAM ) that is, or has failed. Sometimes, if one of the internal fans has failed or is failing, a computer will start up, and than shut itsself down again. Look for any error messages that may come across the screen. Get on another computer, and search for "computer beep codes". If you have the original manual that came with the computer, sometimes it will list beep codes in it. As it has been pointed out, it could be the hard drive also, check the beep codes, that is a good place to start.
if it wont load your icons and freezes before your xmb, put it into safemode and try restoring the filing system. to get it into safemode...
hold down the power button while the console is in standby. the light will go from red to green.it will beep once flash green beep again, and then beep a third time. after the third beep the light will turn red.
once the light is red, take your finger off the power button and place it back on the power button. the light will go from red to green, beep once flash and then beep twice quickly. after it does the double beep, take your finge roff. the light will stay green and you'll get a screen asking you to connect the controller.
after connecting the controller, try option 3, or whichever option is restore filing system. this can possibly correct media loading and will 95% of the time fix the console when it freezes before loading up your icons(the xmb)
The beep you hear is your BIOS trying to alert you to an error in the POST (power on self test) routine. Without knowing the manufacturer of your motherboard one can't be certain what the beeps indicate...see this link for more info: http://www.5starsupport.com/info/beep_codes.htm
It's possible you have some kind of infestation, and it's possible there's something more systemic, but without knowing the make and model of your system I couldn't say.
Sometimes three beeps indicates a keyboard error...you could try another keyboard or unplug yours and see if it will boot up "normally" without it.
Otherwise, report back with some more info and we'll take it from there.
if it freezes then you might want to try turning it on or off and then if that doesent help go thru a series of things but first you have got to back up all of your saved files onto a usb flash drive or something after all of that is done then what you do is turn it off by the soft touch button, turn back on but hold after 5 sec you will here a single beep then after that you will hare a seires of beeps then you let it go then there will be a screen that says plug in your ps3 remote and hit the ps button, then you will come to a menue screen then all you got to do is restore your system, it should work fine if not then just yell at sony for making such a **** product =]
