Sounds like your pressure switch is bad. The pressure switch tells the compressor when to turn on, and off. When the air pressure is low it comes on, and turns it off when it get to the right pressure.

SOURCE: runs 3-5 seconds and then the breaker trips

The problem could be caused by one of several issues.

  • Cold compressor
  • Extension cord
  • To main items using the same circuit as the compressor
  • Faulty unloader valve.
First one's easy. Depending on where you live if it's cold it means the compressor's oil is cold also. I need to place a small space heater near my compressor to warm it up or the same thing happens to me.

Another issue is the use of an extension cord. Normally Air compressor manuals warm against you using any extension cord. They recommend using a longer air line instead. If you must use one you need to over due it on the size or gauge of wire used. The best place to get good grade cord is from boat supply shops. Ask for shore power supply line. Even using this you should still limit it to no more the 20 feet.

How about you circuit you are using? Air compressors should be on a dedicated circuit. Even though you may have a smaller compressor you should consider creating a dedicated circuit for it. Even small compressors draw a lot of power.

The unloader valve is what bleeds the pressure that remains in the cylinder head and line all the way to the tank check valve. If this fails to bleed off this pressure then when your compressor starts it can be working against as much psi as the max. To check this simply bleed off all the tank pressure using either the water purge at the bottom or the safety relief valve. You may also need to loosen the line coming off the pump manifold to the tank check valve. Just enough to bleed off any exes psi. Now try it. Let it run through a complete cycle. If the problem repeats you may need a new unloader valve.

If you live in colder climate.

My personal guess is that your compressor is just too cold. Compressor oil is normally straight 30 weight. It has no ability to increase it's viscosity during the winter. So bring it inside or place a spae heater hext to it for 10 to 15 minutes. Then give it a try. Once you start using it it will be fine again until it set out in the cold to long without being used.

Do you have a dog? If so just move it in to his house and tell him it's for guard duty. Say it with a straight face or he will wiz on it as soon as your back is turned. ":-}
Hope this helps and "Happy (fill in you personal preference here)" To you and your.

Let me know if you have any more trouble with it.

Check the compressor tank for any water, the symptoms are just what you would expect if there is excessive moisture in the tank.

My ac central air is blowing air but not cold

Problem #1:Outdoor condensing fan motor has stopped running. This problem could be caused by a bad motor run capacitor. If your motor capacitor is not the problem, then more than likely you need a new motor. Is the fan blade tight, stiff or hard to turn? If the fan blade is hard to turn then you probably need a new motor. Problem #2: Air conditioner compressor will not start. When power is applied to the air conditioning outdoor unit the fan starts, but you hear a sound like the compressor is trying to start, "UGGG"..., for about 5 to 10 seconds and then all you hear is the outdoor condenser fan run. The compressor is locked and will not start. What is happening is the compressor is trying to start, but because the compressor motor is locked it tries to start for a few seconds and then because of the high amperage being drawn goes off on internal overload. The internal overload protects the compressor windings from overheating and burning up. I see this many times during the start of the air conditioning season. Some compressors just have a hard time starting after sitting all winter long. Some compressors are locked up so bad that I can not start them and must tell my customer that they need a new compressor . Many times I can get the compressor started again without having to buy a new compressor or new air conditioning system by using the device known as a "Super-Boost." I keep two or three of these on the truck. They have saved many of my customers from having to buy new air conditioning compressor. Another good device is called a "5-2-1" kit.

My unit keeps fluxuatng between cold air, then warmer air. It will start cooling then the unit seems to dim then amp back up sending out non cooled air.

Your compressor is drawing locked rotor amps. If the unit dims and then turns off a few seconds later, your compressor is going out on the internal thermal overloads. It could be a bad start capasiter or bad winding in the compressor. If you don't know electricity, it is not something I would recomend a DIY to fix.

simular cylcling problems.

When we turn on our central A/C the fan comes on & the compressor comes on for about 10 seconds & quits

Sounds like a compressor problem to me.Have you tried a hard start kit? This increases the starting torque.Put an amprobe around the common wire to the compressor and see the amperage draw is on start up.It sounds to me the compressor is cutting off on the internal overload. This is located inside the compressor on the common winding. There shoud be a tag on the condenser housing that gives you the info on the unit.Look for:FLA-full load amps, which is normal running amps and LRA-locked rotor amps, which tells you if the compressor is locked(bad). This will be a high number. If this is the case the compressor will have to be replaced. If it is an older A/C,I'd replace the condensing unit. And if possible, replace the indoor unit also. You'll be pleased with the results.Hope this helps. Gregg

Hisense air conditioner

-If both compressor and fan motor starts and stop, thermostat is the defect.
- If only the compressor check for your outlet no sign of discoloration, check the voltage if normal, check the defective overload protector of the compressor it its external, or compressor itself is defective
