Question about Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor
Mower ran last year, has a full charge on battery.
The decompressor is a valve lifter usually on the exhaust valve, the only adjustment is to correctly set the the valve clearances, if they are too slack the lifter will not activate.

Sounds like you are on the right path, maybe some wires on the ignition were replaced backward, and you are sending +12v directly to ground? Does it blow right away?

does it turn over slow or fast if it turns slowly thats the problem so it could be battery or starter they have to have a good amount of rpms to burn fuel right when starting if not it floods out the engine with gas hope this helps thanks wade

lift your seat and look at the label that you got your model number from. to the right of the model number is the serial number. the first six digits of the serial number is the date your tractor was made - for example: serial no. 060802D002756 would make the unit made June 8, 2002

FYI...just thought I'd give a little back...
had exactly the same mower/plow w/ same issue !
mine is an older L-head from pre-1998...used....
19.5hp 3 screw type diaphram fuel pump carb...
the pic's and how to assemble... I will send if,
you email me... Instructions do not come from
B&S when you buy there part # 694056... = 10$
carb rebuild kit...they want to sell the manual too !!!
sku# 0 24847 26246 9 ...shame on them !
they are selling manual # 27xxxx for 20$...
to tell you what to do ! ....%$#-THEM !!!
I made a pdf...with before and after pic's of
how to rebuild this carb...it's quite unique in fuel pump design and simplified governor operation...
running well this 19.5 twin - fan cooled...is like a 25HP !
the carb kit from B&S is generic...w/extra parts...
I have pic's of the actual ones used/needed for this
carb... Main jet is mis-labeled...it's a bowl vent !
There are no jet's to adjust on this carb...
only adjust is idle speed post the governor linkage !
also shown functioning in my .pdf...
