Question about Radio Shack Pro-97 Handheld Scanner
I turn on scanner hear a faint crackling sound no matter were the squelch is turned and dont scan at all but all other functions work
SOURCE: Squelch is open all the time
I had the same problem on a pro-2096. Luckily I work at RadioShack, so I was able to send it out for repair for free. Our repair center replaced the PCB, and it works fine now.

SOURCE: NO SQUELCH
I have a Radio Shack Pro 97 Scanner that I received as a present 1-1/2 years ago. It was working just fine and then suddenly there was no squelch or volume. The keys make noise when pushed, but there is no sound for the squelch or volume. The scanner scans the frequencies but does not stop and play. I went on line and found that other people were having the same problems. I went back to the store that the unit was purchased from and received no help what so ever, they said it’ s off warranty and I was out of luck, nice way to do business??. I think that something that cost as much as this should not be junk after a short period of time. I hope you can help me with this problem I do like radio shack, but I can’t afford to buy items that don’t stand up.

SOURCE: scanner wont scan
provided you turned the squelch know and it didnt help, i would trace back from the squelch control to the first and second transistor you come to and that should be the squelch circuit. if you know how to check them with an ohm meter you can find out which one it is, if not you can just replace them both for under 5 bucks.
