What software did you use for the cloning?
Ghost is the preferred method.
Be sure to choose a disk to disk clone, not a partition clone.
It sounds like you may have created a 20G partition and left 40G unallocated.
Partition Magic may also take care of the problem, if you have access to a copy.

SOURCE: Windows

I've just installed the same type of hard drive in my PC running win XP and have no problems.. do u know that you need to format the disk before it will show up with the other accessible drives?

what to do is - click start, right click on my computer and go to manage.. then double click on storage, disk management local.. and it should show up here, once you format it your all set..

No need for drivers, windows has them already, it's all generic one's the windows is familiar with..

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: how do i format the seagate 5400 160 gig hard drive?

Configuring the BIOS
After completing the drive installation, restart your computer. Your computer
may automatically detect your new drive. If your computer does not
automatically detect your new drive, follow the steps below.
1. Restart your computer. While the computer restarts, run the system
setup program (sometimes called BIOS or CMOS setup). This is usually
done by pressing a special key, such as DELETE, ESC, or F1 during
the startup process.
2. Within the system setup program, instruct the system to auto detect
your new drive.
3. Save the settings and exit the setup program.
When your computer restarts, it should recognize your new drive.

SOURCE: I HAVE A SEAGATE MOMENTUS

If your HDD is not being detected by your portable system trouble shooting is fairly direct:

  1. Remove and re-seat the hard drive to ensure the connection to the system is effective, sometimes there is enough play that over time the connection loses contact due to thermal expansion/contraction and re-seating the drive resolves.
  2. Reset the BIOS default settings. This can be done from within the BIOS (F2 at boot for most systems, F1, F10 and DEL are the other most common entry prompts, watch you screen at boot for BIOS/SETUP access prompts if unsure) Check the Hard Drive Controller Settings/SATA controller settings and write them down, and once you reset the BIOS defaults, check them again. If they have changed, set the controller setting back to the pre-reset setting to avoid 0x0000007B controller errors on reboot. Most Phoenix brand bios can be reset by pressing F9, Enter. Others will have a maintenance section where default settings can be restored. After resetting, save changes and exit this will force re-numeration of all devices by the system, including the hard disk drive. If using a desktop chassis and you have multiple controllers, swap cables with a know working controller (Usually the Optical drive) and see if the drive is detected on that cable and controller and the optical drive on the HDD controller.
  3. If the Hard Drive is still not detected, you can remove the hard drive and install it in a USB external drive case and see if the drive is detected on another system. If it is not, then the drive has failed, and needs replacement. If the drive works in the USB adapter then the controller is suspect on the system the drive was removed from, and a motherboard replacement is likely the end result.

How can I install win xp on aspire one d260 netbook? i have blue sreen of death problem

Hi there,
you can install windows xp with 2 methods
1. you can run recovery dvd if you have created before , if you don't have the dvd you can run the recovery by pressing Alt+F10 when computer boots, It will reinstall windows in the machine. Caution : it will remove all the data from the C Drive
2. You can install the windows by attaching an external CD/DVD Rom with the laptop and install windows xp with the normal CD, one thing you have to do is to change the Hard Drive Sata mode to Native Mode in BIOS, then it will not show you blue screen or NO HARD DRIVE FOUND error while installing windows
Do let us know if you require more assistance

May I know whether the Hard Drive is listed in the BIOS? This issue will occur if the Operating System is corrupted or if the Hard Drive is failed. You can use the Windows disc and reinstall the Windows once. If the reinstallation process is not successful, then you may have to replace the Hard Drive.

Yes, the motherboard should support that size drive with no problems. You will have to reinstall windows using the discs that dell sent you originally. Be aware the drivers for dell can be tricky to reinstall.

Cant reinstall windows because it sayd it cant find a hard drive

two things, check your jumper setting, if it is an IDE hard driver.
Second the computer usually won't recognize the Hard drive until it is formatted for the first time. Did the computer stop and say it could not find hard drive ? and you got F1 to continue, well if you did, just continue. Error 655D is a registry screw up, unplug your usb stuff if you can. remember your drivers aren't installed yet (usb requires drivers-once windows is reinstalling your get the drivers...good luck if you need any more help, just let us know

New hard drive not reconized, motherboard drivers

I had this problem on a computer recently. This particular motherboard may be needing the driver on the Windows XP SP2 disk. Your motherboard may have been made to use Microsoft SATA drivers. Othewise, there would have been a driver disk that came with the motherboard to let it see that SATA hard drive.
If it's a new hard drive, you have to reinstall the O/S so use a disk new enough to have SP2 included.

Cant find my SATA HDD

Yes - find the chipset for the motherboard - go on intel website for that chipset - download the utility for F6 use [sata driver or raid controller] put these files on floppy or USB key - boot motherboard and when it says press F6 to instal SCSI or other drivers press F6 - the software will ask where the files are - use the correct file and carry on running the windows installation. This time your sata hard drive will be recognised and you can complete loading windows.

Please rate my assistance - thank you.
