SOURCE: I have a Champion Longlife 3.5hp Rototiller. It

I placed the washer and bolt back into the top of the shaft and struck the bolt head with a downward force after the penatrating oil had been working on it for two days of repeated applications. The Bushing and seal were shot, made a new bushing and will not replace the seal. There is no way for lubrication to get that far up the shaft of the gearbox to keep the seal/bushing operable under normal operations so I will lube from the top periodically.

Mcculloch MS 1415 electric chain saw throws chains


I had a saw that did that and found my blade the chain runs in was bent. Another problem was the groove the chain goes in had a gouge that did not look like much but was just enough to throw the chain. Also check the drive sprocket and make sure it lines up with the groove in the blade the chain runs in.I replaced the blade and its ok now.

Stairmaster Stepper Drive Hub Assembly Replacement
  1. Remove the side covers.
  2. Remove the step chain retainers.
  3. Supposrt the pedal arm. Unhook the pedal arm return spring from the spring hanger. Lift the step chain up and off the clutch sprocket and lower the pedal arm to the floor. Repeat on the other side.
  4. Remove the snap ring from the left end of the drive shaft. WARNING: To reduce the risk of eye injury, wear eye protection when removing snap rings.
  5. Remove the drive chain.
  6. Remove the sprocket and other small parts from the left side of the hub assembly.
  7. Slide the drive shaft to the right, out of the hub assembly. If you remove the right-hand clutch sprocket form the drive shaft, do not confuse it with the left-hand clutch sprocket.
  8. Loosen and remove the two remaining bolts and nuts that hold the hub assembly to the frame. Remove the hub assembly.
  9. Inspect the drive shaft, bushings, thrust washers, and clutch sprockets for excessive wear or pitting. Replace any worn components.
  10. To reinstall the hub assembly, carefull reverse the disassembly procedures. Be sure that the right- and left-hand clutch sprockets are positioned correctly; the wide shoulder of the sprocket should be facing away from the hub on both sides.
  11. Chain Tension. The drive shaft is mounted in an eccentric hub. Rotate the hub so the marked hole is in the 12 o'clock posistion, lining up four holes in th hub with the four holes in the frame. Use this hub position when reinstalling the drive chain since the distance between the drive and the transmission shafts is at a minimum. The hub is in the proper position when the drive chain has a total of 1" to 1-1/2" of play, up and down, at the slackest point in the chain. If it is necessary to increase the tension or tighten the chain, rotate the hub counter clockwise until the chain has proper tension.
  12. Reinstall the covers.

  1. Remove the side covers. WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY, DO NOT OPERATE THE MACHINE WHILE THE COVERS ARE REMOVED. DO NOT DEPRESS OR RAISE THE PEDALS WHILE ANYONE'S HANDS ARE INSIDE THE MACHINE.
  2. Remove the Poly-V belt and inspect the belt for cracks, fraying or any other unusual or excessive wear.
  3. Spin the alternator pulley to check the bearings. Replace the alternator if any clicking or grinding noises are heard.
  4. Inspect the alternator pulley for wear.
  5. Tighten the transmission pulley set screw to the flat side of the transmission output shaft.
  6. Remove the drive chain and inspect the chain for frozen links. Replace a chain with frozen links.
  7. Tighten the transmission drive sprocket set screw to the keyway in the transmission input shaft.
  8. Spin the transmission drive sprocket input 1 complete revolution. The transmission pulley output should turn 19 revolutions. Replace the transmission if any clicking or grinding noises are heard during rotation or the drive ratio is not 19 to 1.
  9. Remove the step chains and return springs from the main frame of the machine.
  10. Inspect the step chains for frozen links and the springs for corrosion. Replace a chain with frozen links and replace a corroded spring.
  11. Make sure that the step chain connection points pivot freely and have no vertical play.
  12. Remove the pedals, pedal arms, and leveling arms and lubricate according to the maintenance section of the manual.
  13. Verify that the clutch sprockets of the hub assembly spin freely in the forward direction and lock in the reverse direction.
  14. Inspect the hub assembly for wear. The drive shaft sprocket should not move up and down or side to side.
  15. Clean and lubricate the drive and step chains with 30W motor oil.
  16. Reinstall all parts, ensuring the proper tension of the Poly-V belt and the drive chain.

My gear will turn without having the chain on . When chain is attached it the motor just works. No chain movement


I wasn't familiar with your saw but I looked at the parts diagram for it in the link below thinking there may be a replaceable drive pin or something like it that would possibly have sheared.

I didn't see any. That would indicate that the sprocket may be stripped out on the inside and would require replacement, or, that there is something stripped inside the gearcase. If you look at the diagram, the motor shaft is parallel with the handle. So to drive the sprocket gear that drives the chain, they use gears inside the housing to turn the sprocket that's at a right angle to the motor shaft. Do you follow me? It would appear from the parts diagram that if it is those internal gears, that it would require replacement of the whole motor/gear assembly ...... probably as expensive as a whole new saw!

The reason that the sprocket turns without the chain on is that there is evidently enough friction between the shaft that the sprocket mounts on, and, the sprocket. But not enough of a connection to drive the chain.

To check further, leave the saw unplugged, and use your finger to try to turn the sprocket. If it turns by hand like that, it would indicate that something is stripped out as I said. To see if it is the sprocket, remove the "Retaining Ring, 5/16" that is shown in the diagram, and inspect the inside of the sprocket. If that appears good, then it would be an internal problem and probably not worth fixing.

It is most definitely a transmission code.

P0741 = Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off

If there is a whine/whirring sound, it may be due to drive sprocket support bearing fluting and/or bearing failure.

Replace the drive sprocket support bearing. Inspect the channel plate and drive sprocket for any abnormal wear, Turbine shaft for cut seals and/or nicks, and chain for excessive play due to failed bearings.

Important:
When installing the new bearing, the part number MUST be visible (facing upward). Before installing the drive sprocket, lubricate the bearing assembly with J 36850 assembly lubricant.

Timing chain 96 maxima broke


Check your owner's manual for the recommended mileage for replacing your timing chain. Replacement for a Nissan Maxima is 60,000 miles.2 Locate the timing chain. Replace it if the automatic chain adjuster (also known as the tensioner) is damaged or worn.3 Release the pressure in the fuel system, drain the cooling system and disengage the negative battery cable. 4 Undo the upper radiator hose, engine drive belts, power steering pulley and pump with bracket, air duct, passenger front wheel and engine side and undercovers, front exhaust pipe, cylinder head front mounting bracket and head cover, rocker cover, distributor and distributor cap and spark plugs.5 Take off the intake manifold support and move the No. 1 piston at "Top Dead Center" (TDC) of the compression stroke.6 Disconnect the cylinder head front cover, water pump pulley, thermostat housing, upper and lower tensioner and slack side timing chain guide, idler sprocket bolt, camshaft sprocket bolts, sprockets, mounting caps and camshafts. 7 Disengage the cylinder head with the manifolds, idler sprocket shaft, upper timing chain, center crossmember, oil pan and strainer assembly, crankshaft pulley, engine front mount and bracket and the front timing cover. Remove the oil seal and unfasten the timing chain cover, idler and crankshaft sprockets and the oil pump drive spacer. 8 Unfasten the timing chain guide. install Your Timing Chain 1 Grease the oil seal lip with engine oil and place it in the front cover. Verify that the No. 1 piston is at "Top Dead Center" (TDC) of the compression stroke. 2 Reconnect the crankshaft sprocket (marks should point toward the engine's front), oil pump drive spacer and timing chain guide and the lower timing chain. Line up all mating marks.3 Hook up the crankshaft sprocket and pulley, lower timing chain, front cover assembly, engine mount and front mounting bracket, oil strainer and pan assembly and center crossmember.4 Reattach the upper timing chain, idler sprocket (to the back side), cylinder head assembly, idler sprocket bolt and exhaust and intake camshafts. Place the intake camshaft knock pin at 9 o'clock and the exhaust pin at noon. Connect the camshaft bearing caps and distributor brackets and secure all mounting bolts.5 Eliminate any old material from the pan and cylinder block mounting surfaces. Rub on a 3.5 to 4.5mm bead of liquid gasket over the oil pan and cylinder block.6 Attach the upper timing chain to the idler sprockets and secure the cylinder head bolts.7 Refill the cooling system. Hook up the negative battery cable and any other disconnected items. Start the engine and look for leaks.

The chain came off my Craftsman 53920 garage door opener. How can I fix this problem?


When a chain comes off it is an indication of another problem. The bearing on the sprocket shaft is bad and lets the sprocket lean forward and the chain pops off. The part number you need is 41C4220A Gear and Sprocket Assembly. The chain can be loosened by the nuts on the trolley.

Liftmaster garage door squeaks very loudly, I have luped all parts on the door but sound is coming from motor?


This is usually caused by a bad bearing on the shaft of the Gear and Sprocket Assembly. When it wears enough it will also let the chain come off the sprocket. If you look at the sprocket closely you can usually see that the shaft is leaning toward the door.

Removal
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03 for the procedure.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove the generator drive belt, water pump and power steering pump drive belt, and the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped). Refer to Section 03-05 for the removal procedure.
  1. If equipped, remove the three A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley bolts and the A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley.
  1. Remove the upper radiator hose bracket bolt.
  1. Loosen the two upper radiator hose clamps and remove the radiator hose bracket bolt. Remove the upper radiator hose (8260) and the upper radiator hose bracket from the vehicle.
  1. Remove the water bypass hose (8597) from between the thermostat housing and the water hose connection (8592) .
  1. Remove the main wiring harness from the upper engine front cover (6019) .
  1. Remove the eight upper engine front cover bolts and the upper engine front cover .
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  1. Remove the RH front wheel and tire assembly.
  1. Remove the four RH outer engine and transmission splash shield bolts and two screws and remove the RH outer engine and transmission splash shield (6775) .
  1. Use Strap Wrench 303-D055 (D85L-6000-A) or equivalent to hold the water pump pulley (8509) while removing the four water pump pulley bolts.
  1. Remove the water pump pulley from the water pump (8501) .
  1. Remove the crankshaft pulley (6312) . Refer to the procedure in this section.
  1. Remove the five lower engine front cover bolts and the lower engine front cover .
  2. Ensure that the timing marks between the crankshaft sprocket (6306) and the oil pump housing line up.
  3. NOTE: The directional arrow is necessary to ensure that the timing chain/belt (6268) can be reinstalled in the same direction.
  4. Loosen the timing chain/belt tensioner nut.
  5. Remove the timing chain/belt .

  6. Installation
    NOTE: Ensure that the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets (6256) and the seal plate are properly aligned. Ensure that the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump housing are still aligned. NOTE: A new timing chain/belt has three white timing marks that indicate the correct timing positions of the camshafts (6250) and the crankshaft (6303) . These marks will help ensure that the engine (6007) is timed properly. When the engine is properly timed each white timing mark on the timing chain/belt will be aligned with the corresponding camshaft and crankshaft timing mark on the sprocket. Because the white timing marks are not evenly spaced you will need to refer to the following illustration for proper timing chain/belt placement. There should be 40 timing belt teeth between the timing marks of the front and rear camshaft sprockets and 43 teeth between the timing mark on the front camshaft sprocket and the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket .

    NOTE: Verify that the camshaft timing marks are aligned with the timing marks on the seal plate, and that the crankshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with the timing mark on the oil pump (6600) .

    Install the timing chain/belt starting at the crankshaft sprocket and moving around to the camshaft sprocket following a counterclockwise path. Do not allow any slack in the timing chain/belt between the timing sprockets. After all of the timing marks are matched up with the timing chain/belt installed, slip the timing chain/belt onto the timing chain/belt tensioner .
