Try tapping the F5 or F8 key (could be either one) right after you power up. This should take you to a short text message with a couple of choices to continue; you'll find the Safe Mode option there which will prevent the continuation of the unsuccessful boot routine. If you can reach the Safe Mode, run Restore and go back to an earlier point in time, you may have to go back several times because if you have picked up some kind of malware, it may have been backed up with everything else. Unless it is a really smart bug, you might be able to circumvent it.

Sounds like a faulty hard drive that is locking up the system. Take out the hard drive completely and turn on the computer and see if it goes past the HP screen. If it does then the hard drive is bad. If it still locks up on you then reseat the memory one stick at a time in one slot at a time. If this doesnt work then you might be having motherboard issues.

The hard drive could be failing. Try running the test this way.
First you'll have to power off the system.
You need to hold down the Fn button (Located next to the CTRL button on the left hand corner) and then power on the system. This will take the system to the diagnostics mode.
After running a series of tests you'll be prompted to "Press any key to boot to the diagnostics partitions". Now you'll get a prompt to test the computer. You need to select the option and run a CUSTOM TEST on the hard drive.
Write down any error codes listed and continue testing.
If you get any errors note then and contact technical support.
