My acer Travelmate 5620 17'' only display (thin bright and broad dim) horizontal lines when switched on. External display and svideo works fine! Sometimes when booting the display gets snowy with multi coloured dots but goes back to horizontal lines.

To adjust the brightness in your Acer Travelmate, press the [FN] key then press the left or right arrow directional keys which is usually on the lower right-hand side of the keyboard. You will identify the brightness and dim symbol/icon. I hope this is of help. Thank you.
most likely you have a faulty LCD screen, the only option u have is to replaced it or u can use a external LCD screen to act as screen for your laptop. you'll be needing a VGA cable to connect your laptop to any LCD screen available.
If this happened suddenly, the backlight power supply (inverter) has probably failed.
It could be the backlight itself but they normally will dim or flicker before they die.
Try shining a light at an angle on the display with the computer turned on and look at it from an angle too.
You may be able to see video very faintly; if you do, then it is as described above; a backlight problem, not the LCD display itself.
