Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

How do I remove an old wall mounted Microwave.

I have a GE Spacemaker JVM 45 wall mounted microwave. It is 25 years old and has finally died. I need to remove it to install the new one.
How do I detach it from the wall. There are no screws or bolts into the cabinets above or beside it. It appears to be attached only to the wall behind the stove.
I cannot find the original manual.

I just removed mine this morning and was having the same problem, though mine did have the screws above going into the unit. You may have to pop the front vent cover off to locate the screws going to the wall bracket, if so remove those. Also, there are 2 tabs on the bottom of the wall bracket that the back bottom edge of the microwave slip into, keeping the microwave from being pulled forward. Tilt the microwave slightly forward and push the bottom back edge of the microwave up to clear the tabs. Hope this helps.

The GE Spacemaker series of microwave ovens are designed to be installed above an oven range, freeing up counter space in your kitchen. Some of these Spacemaker models are connected to an outside venting system to carry kitchen vapor and odors outside. Other Spacemaker models utilize a ductless system to do this. Removing a GE Spacemaker microwave oven isn't a difficult task, but, because of the size of some of the oven models, it is a two-man operation. Have a question? Things You'll Need

  • Assistant
  • Sharp knife
  • Phillips screwdriver
Instructions
    • 1 Open the cabinet above where the Spacemaker microwave oven is installed. If you see a vent in the cabinet leading to the Spacemaker oven below, your Spacemaker is vented. This vent needs to be disconnected before continuing with removal. Disconnect the vent either by loosening the duct clamps or by cutting the duct tape away with a sharp knife. Pull the vent out of the top of the oven.
    • 2 Have an assistant support the oven from below. Loosen the mounting screws connected to the Spacemaker through the cabinet bottom. Loosen the screws by turning counterclockwise with the Phillips screwdriver.
    • 3 Unplug the Spacemaker from the socket in the cabinet.
    • 4 Continue loosening the screws while your assistant holds the oven in place. Once the screws are removed, have your assistant slowly lower the Spacemaker down by lowering the front face at a 45-degree angle.
    • 5 Feed the power cable for the Spacemaker through the hole in the bottom in the supporting cabinet.
    • 6 Help your assistant slowly pull the Spacemaker forward and out of the mounting brackets on the rear wall. Once the Spacemaker is cleared of the mounting cabinet and rear wall, set it down.
    • 7 Remove the mounting bracket from the rear wall by loosening the screws.

Remove mounted GE Spacemaker Microwave JVM140K

There should be 2-3 screws thru the floor of the cabinet above the m/w that secure it in the front. Once those are removed the m/w will slide straight out on rails mounted to the wall plate.

Microwave oven just quit. Have checked fuse and plug. Have had no earlier problems. Do these ovens just ''wear out''? It is 8 years old. It is a GE Spacemaker. (November 2002) GE Spacemaker Serial...

yes they wear out. usally the first part to quit is the unit inside that creates the microwaves called the "magnetron" over time they will wear out, and so will the circuitry that runs the entire microwave, some will last 8 years like yours, some only a year or 2. 8 years is pretty good for the life of a microwave. but yea, its time to get yourself a new one. good luck to you

Removal of GE Spacemaker Microwave oven

1. Unplug the microwave. The plug is probably in a receptacle that is in the cabinet above the microwave, or in the wall above the shelf that is above the microwave.

2. Remove the two (or three) screws that go straight down through the bottom of the cabinet, or the shelf, into the top of the microwave. Have help in holding the microwave when you do this, as the front of the microwave will be able to fall down when the screws are removed.

3. Allow the front of the microwave to rotate down a little, then lift the back of the unit up about 1/2" to 1". At this point, the microwave will be disconnected from the mounting plate on the wall, so you can move it forward and carry it away.
