Question about Computers & Internet
BESTEC SMPS for Repair Please tell me the procedure how to repair the SMPS
1) PROPERLY discharge the Electroytic Capacitors inside, BEFORE working on the unit.
The Electrolytic Capacitors used are Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors.
The large ones you see, are used in the Input Stage. They filter the incoming AC electricity.
These capacitors can hold a charge of Up To 100 Volts.
That is enough power to stop your heart. In other words -> FATAL
This of course does NOT make me want to post info, about possible repair on your Power Supply.
Above ALL, I do NOT want You to come to ANY harm!!
However I know that some situations require trying to fix a unit. It isn't always possible to go out, and but a new unit.
I just want YOU to be SAFE!
The Bestec units are of low quality.
1) Low quality Electrolytic Capacitors
2) Low quality Rectifier Bridge
3) Low quality Power MOSFET's
4) Lighter gauge of wiring, then what should be used
The Electrolytic Capacitors are the weakest link. Start with a visual inspection, and see if any are bad.
Using the direct link option does not seem to be available for me. Therefore you have to copy each link I will state, and paste it in your address bar. (http://) Then press the Enter key.
If you are unaware of how to do this, please post back in a Comment.
The same information for Electrolytic Capacitors on a desktop computer motherboard, can be applied to the Electrolytic Capacitors in your Bestec power supply;

What about the power supply? I bet it's supply's issue. Otherwise make sure that PWR button wires are connected properly and to the correct terminals of the motherboard

Hi this might not be a motherboard problem. Remove the memory card and clean the contacts and reinstall it. If this will not work for you replace the memory card with the same type you have in your computer. Hope this info will help you solve the problem

I have not identified the specific components on the motherboard that blow, but I can tell you the defect in the Bestec supply. The +5 VSB, which is the voltage that is on at all times, loses regulation and climbs to 8-11 volts. I believe this "higher than the required" +5V takes out the components on the motherboard involved with the computer/power supply "turn-on" circuitry. The "on" button on the eMachines front panel no longer turns the motherboard on because the "kept alive when the main power is off circuits" - which allow the on/off button to do its job of turning on the machine - no longer work.
Test your Bestec power supply by plugging it in the wall socket and have it not connected to anything. Read the voltage between the purple wire and any black wire. If you see +5.0V, then this wasn't your problem. If, like it did on mine, is closer to between 8, and 11 V, this is what took out the motherboard.
