Question about Porter Cable 362 12 Amp 4 Inch By 24 Inch Belt Sander With Cloth Dust Bag

1 Answer

Smells like wires buning

About 4 years old, worked fine until I started to belt sand something, and all of a sudden a strong smell of electrical wires burning was present. I've had tools last 20 plus years, hard to believe a good name like this would go out so soon. would assume the motor is burning up. any recourse?

What is brand and model. It could be a broken wire in the cord or a burnt switch or worse case the windings in the motor are going bad, however the bearings could be also locking up causing it to slow down and heating up. I will look at a print when you get back to me and see what I can do for you

Motor may just need new brushes, Cooling vents may be clogged with dust. or bearings in the motor or front roller maybe bad. Causing excessive drag
blow it all out with compressed air or shopvac
look for external brush caps (2) oppsite from each other take them out to be sure they slide freely, sometimes one gets hug up and doesn't make good contact

Black & Decker Belt Sander suddenly stopped working.

Probably not.
It may have just had a part break inside, like the on-off switch, or one of the wires to one of the brushes, etc., etc.
I buy these regularly, and they are inexpensive, which also means they are made of inexpensive ( cheap) parts.
It wouldn't hurt to take it apart, knowing it may not be repairable. Sometimes parts are available on-line.
Be blessed.

How to clean a clogged belt sander

I assume you mean you want to clean the belt itself? You can use a rubber stick made for this. It looks and smells like a giant pencil eraser, about 1 inch square and about 10 inches long. However, if the belt is clogged with melted paint, that won't do much - but a stiff wire brush works OK. If the wire brush doesn't work, get a new belt. You can avoid the melted paint buildup (or at least reduce it) if you keep the sander moving rapidly over the surface, and use a good quality scraper to remove as much paint as possible before sanding.
Good luck!

I am using a Model 343 type 2 Porter Cable random orbital sander. It worked just fine, I turned it off, and 20 minutes later it would not turn back on. No strange noises, smells, etc. it just wouldn't...

Plug in the sander, Turn it on and Wiggle the wire around the plug. If your sander jumps on and off your plug need to be replaced. This should be a easy fix if you are a bit mechanically inclined. If that doesn't work, get a ohm meter and see if your cord is hooped. If cord is fine then look at the brushes.

After installing new belt, on Porter Belt Sander 352VS #6 the belt drifts of to one side until it comes completely off. How do I stop this?

There is a tracking adjustment knob on the side of the sander--adjust one way or the other until it tracks properly. This is something that will change by itself as the sander is being used--check periodically.
