Question about Recoton Advent Advent Q2035A 20" TV
I just got an Advent 32'' model Q3235A tv from the neighbors, the screen is flat but its a regular big box tv, not a flat panel. Anyways, when i first turn it on the picture is fine, then about 5 minutes into it being on, the screen turns black with squiggly colors of green, pink, etc. My roommate thinks its because it overheats, and my boyfriend thinks its either because theres a lot of dust inside or because the fact that the speakers are too close to the parts and since speakers have magnets its interfering with the display. I think both of them are wrong, can you help me? Is it a part that needs to be replaced, or is it really damaged, or what?
Your problem is not due to magnetism. If the set needed degaussing, the picture would otherwise be normal except for spots on the screen where the colors were wrong. The screen wouldn't go black with colored squiggles. You have a thermal problem with some part of the circuitry that begins acting flaky after the set warms up.
The usual technique for troubleshooting a thermal problem is to get a spray can of cooler, and chill down suspect components until the problem clears up. Without knowing all the details (and not having worked on many Advent TV's) I can't suggest any specific parts. But a common trouble is an integrated circuit often called the "jungle" IC which does most of the video processing. If the trouble occurs on TV channels but not when you are using a video input with a DVD player or other source, this could also be a symptom of bad solder connections in the tuner.
Unfortunately, this problem is not something you'll be able to fix just by opening the set and cleaning or moving speakers. Your best bet if you want to keep the set would be to have a TV technician check it and give an estimate for the repair.

Get speakers away from screen, Yes magnetism causes this problem. You must use shielded speakers if they are close to a TV.
