Your wash machine may have a water level sensor. If the sensor does not feel the pressure build in the water line; your machine will not fill. Research to find out if your particular machine has a water level sensor.

I have an LG top loading washer, model WT4870CW. During the wash cycle the machine makes a grinding noise. The noise does not occur during draining and spin cycles. Any idea what could be the issue?

Is your agitator moving back and fourth, when on wash cycle
Could be your plastic agitator spline is stripped,

Take it out and check the plastic teeth is not worn inside.

Washer stops cycleing

First are you sure the error code is 'LE' and not 'tE' which looks very similar. The LE is usually the motor position sensor. Common on older washers. Easy fix. Under $20 part. The tE error is usually the thermistor. Inexpensive part about $6, but can be more complicated to get to. Ad a comment to your question and my answer with error code and I'll reply with more info if needed.
