On the keyboard there is second from the left in the bottom row a key where you can change languages.
You can also get smilies by using the same key. When you want to go back to the alphabet push the abc key
In the lower right of the keyboard is a keyboard key (it looks like an icon of the keyboard). Touch and hold the keyboard key. After a second or so, word choices will pop up saying something like "Dock" and "Unspilt". Touch one of the words. If you want to do both actions, repeat the process for the latter.
It sounds like you have a ToughBook with a NON-US Keyboard or keyboard layout. The physical "SLASH" key is the last key on the bottom row above the SPACEBAR row.
It is the key on the FAR right side just to the left of the right-side
SHIFT key. Make sure in the taskbar that the EN sign is shown
(on the bottom right side of the screen next to the date/time.
If it is shown FR or ES then your keyboard is in French or Spanish.
You can try to use the ALT+SHIFT key combination to toggle
the FR or ES back to EN (English). If not, then you must
ADD the English keyboard in the Control Panel under
Regional Settings (Clock, Language and Region in Windows 7).
Under Keyboards Click "keyboard" then Click "add" then
choose English (United States), Keyboard then US (only).
That is it. Make sure you select US as "Default" and then you
won't have to go thru all this ever again.

I have a Zagg keyboard for my iPad mini. I found the same thing happened but then realized it only works in most apps, not all. For example it doesnt work when typing in a password in settings. Try you keyboard in an app like notes. Also make sure you haveheld down the power for long enough that the light is red for 5 seconds.
You have put the keyboard into split mode. You can split the iPad's keyboard in two by either tapping and holding on the 'toggle keyboard' button on the lower-right, or simply pulling the keyboard apart at the middle.
You can put it back to normal by pinching the keyboard back together or by tapping the button on the lower right.
